Snohomsih County at it again? they want to close a shooting pit in Sultan. I wonder if it meets 9.41.300?

(a) Restricting the discharge of firearms in any portion of their respective jurisdictions where there is a reasonable likelihood that humans, domestic animals, or property will be jeopardized. Such laws and ordinances shall not abridge the right of the individual guaranteed by Article I, section 24 of the state Constitution to bear arms in defense of self or others; and

Another Shooting Area Soon To be Gone

The first reading of the ordinance is tomorrow morning. Since it is the first reading as many as possible should attend and let the Council know that it is not appreciated that all they do is close areas. Make them hear that it is time for them to open a couple. They don't have to be first class Country Club class Ranges, just open safe areas with a good berm. I'd even settle for a gate that would close the area at night and allow shooting during daylight hours only.

The county always says no money but that just means they don't have enough to make a Taj Mahal of a Range. No money for supervision, etc. Why not just put a trailer on site and let someone who is out of work live there for free in return for overseeing the area? Not be a cop but advise shooters of rules and see that the area is kept clean. Why not, the County is probably paying for these people's housing somewhere else, why not combine free rent with a little responsibility. Might even have volunteers.

The meeting is currently under way. Testimony is being given by both sides. The typical arrguments. It makes too much noise! It's unsafe! They drink and shoot! The Tannerite shakes my house! They leave garbage behind! These are from the people that live nearby although one neighbor said they wanted to see a safe area established for the shooters just not next door.

Others are pointing out that the County has been "entertaining" a proposal to build a range in the area for almost 40 years. Also asking for delay in closing the range until the County establishes another area.

As I said, the meeting is still going on and is being "webcast".

Ok, so I just caught the tail end and the vote... I take it that was not good. They voted to shut down the pit? What were they talking about "Volunteers"?

The 3 attending council members voted to support the request of nearby home owners to shut the pit down due to noise and safety concerns. Some of those who testified in favor of getting the county's long planned gun range built offered to volunteer in this endeavor. The fact that the council asked for those volunteer's names might be a hopeful sign that this range is actually going to be built. The proposal to build this range was made 40 years ago.

Currently, the county is trying to acquire the DNR land to make this happen. The gears of government grind slowly (except for when it comes to taxes). Once that does happen, there were folks at this meeting who talked of the various grants available to help fund a Snohomish County Range and of volunteer groups willing to pitch in.

One consoling comment by a Comissioner was that he too felt it was time to get off their asses and develop a new shooting area. It would behoove all shooters in Snohomish County to keep contacting the commissioners and statingthat their action on this is long overdue. Even the paperwork to transfer the land necessary is lost currently in the "bureaucratic shuffle". You'd think that even a group of monkeys could figure something like this out after 40 years. Just think how much less it would have cost in 1970 than today.
