Thsi proves, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that some people believe there are TWO standards of the law in our nation--one for "officials" and one for "the rest of us"..

http://www.witn.com/crime/headlines/84496182.html

A Sheriff who is a "prohibited person"? Under Federal law this guy can't possess, purchase, or carry a firearm. This fellow has filed to run for Sheriff in Washington County, NC.

That should make for some effective "Sheriff-ing"... :banghead:

EVERY single person in NC should be aware of, and outraged by this. Thsi guy was conviced and served time for EMBEZZLEMENT. He is a THIEF, and he want's to be the Primary Law Enforcement Official in one of our most-traveled-through coastal counties, where tourism is BIG business. If elected, he could be a nation-wide embarassment to our fine state...

At therisk stepping on the other side of the aisle here, I believe that most, if not all dept.'s DO NOT require sheriffs to carry side-arms. For example, how many times did you see Andy Griffith packing heat(Now Barney Fife is a whole other story) and wasn't he sheriff of a city in NC?

A former sheriff who served time for embezzlement is once again running for the sheriff’s seat.

The Washington County Board of Elections confirmed Stanley James has filed to run for sheriff.

James is a convicted felon who served about two months in prison, according to the NC Department of Corrections.

James, who had been sheriff in Washington County starting in 1998, was indicted in 2004. He was convicted in 2006 and served time from September 2007 to November 2007.

North Carolina is one of a dozen or so states where a convicted felon can run for office after his or her civil rights are restored. Elections officials say James registered to vote in October 2009 after his voting rights were restored.

Officials do say convicted felons are not permitted to carry firearms in North Carolina.

Elections officials say James has filed to run as a democrat, and that the only other competitor currently in the race is the incumbent sheriff, James Ross. He is also a democrat, so a primary race would be needed.

We are working to contact Stanley James.

Just be happy you don't have it as bad as California. Here you have to be a POST graduate to qualify as a Sheriff anymore. . . no such thing as new blood here.

There were a couple episodes where Andy grabbed a rifle out of the rifle rack in the Sheriff's Office.

I agree with your point, but it is nothing new in the state of North Carolina.

We're already dealing with this near my county (of Guilford), Davidson County, which I pay close attention to because I have to drive through it often and sometimes visit there. I'm sure you've heard of ol' Sheriff Gerald Hege? Well, he's running for Sheriff, again, in Davidson County and guess what, he is a convicted felon and for what? Embezzelment. Lots of crap flying around these days: http://www.sheriffhege.com/

That site is old, I'm sure. Here is a facebook page for his campaign next to his infamous personal spider patrol car. He is known for having one of the most intimidating (to criminals) Sheriff's Departments in the country at one point. Of course, before he was picked up for embezzlement, quite a few of his deputies were arrested for various other crimes of corruption.

In North Carolina, if you satisfactorily complete all of your requirements as a convicted felon, that is time served, probation, parole, restitution, fines, etc, etc, etc your rights are restored automatically and without question.

He can vote and he can run for office. While some do not agree with a convicted felon running for and even being Sheriff or in any office, it must be praised that our country has such liberty that "the people" have the right to elect [just about] anyone they choose to, through a domineering vote. In some cases, this is a majority vote.

The law is as it should be, but I should hope that the good people of the County would consider whether somebody that recently in the hoosgow should be running it.

As a convicted felon, that has earned my rights back in VA.(they are not just given back here) I would love to be able to work in law enforcment but VA law forbids it. Alot of things are feloniesby law, which often should not be.

And sometimes good people make stupid decisions, then never make those or similar mistakes again, let's just hope this guy is one of them.Certain violent and sex crimes aside, most crimes are and should beforgivable.
