question regarding open carry and employment

So I have 2 similar questions that I was hoping you guys could give me advice on.


How does one go about open carrying at employment??? Or maybe I should say......How does one approach the subject of open carry at your place of work???




The second question is more specific about my situation. I'm a stay at home Dad during the day and get work at night through Labor Ready. They call me when they have work and send me to the job site. So pretty much every job is at a different location doing different jobs for different businesses.

I'm curious how to approach the subject of open carry with Labor Ready and the Job sites they send me to. Specially since I work at night, and always in different locations. Occasionally I work indoors, sometimes outdoors. Sometimes closely surrounded by many workers, and sometimes by myself with other people/employers somewhere on the grounds.


So.......how do I go about finding out whether or not I'm allowed to carry???

That is going to depend on where they send you. Labor Ready might not have a problem with it but their client might. And their client might not say anything to you but instead ask Labor Ready to not send you out anymore. Which in turn may cause Labor Ready to send you less paying and fewer jobs. Just my experience as a contractor. Easiest thing is to ask Labor Ready what their policy is and if they see any problems with it. Or better yet ready any new hire paperwork as most employers will state their rules regarding weapons in the workplace.

Unfortunately my contracts require me to work for various government agencies that might not be so understanding. Other times if I know the customer/client more personally I can get away with it even though it looks extremely funny watching me run around with a gun and a laptop tearing apart computers lol.

I can't say what anyone else would or should do, but this is what I would do.

I'd would read the company policies first. Request a copy for yourself as well. If asking a supervisor a question, a lot of times the answer will be what they "believe" to be correct when it might be going against the company regulations.

So, I'd check to see if there us a regulation/policy regarding weapons at work. Keep in mind, each work site probably has their own policies regarding weapons as well. I use weapons instead of firearms due to many places don't allow knives either.

My place of employment definaty does not allow firearms on grounds, in addition to any other type of weapon, even for off duty LEOs. They were informed to have their badge visible when in plain clothes to give the illusion of on duty. We were always told armed security officers needed to leave their firearms in their vehicle. I checked the regs, and now I do t stop them at all, as the regs say they can carry when performing their function.

Basically, know the policies first. If nothing is in the policies, then I would see your supervisor.

I think you’ll find that most large companies will have a policy relating to weapons in the workplace.

Like ffent1079 said you need to start with a policy manual and after that, it’s a really hard subject to “Work Into” a conversation.

Good Luck & let us know what happens if you do eventually ask.

we have a policy requiring firearms in the work place....................but were just that way.:D

If you find out they don't want you to be able to defend yourself...

"OK, that's cool. So how do I notify the armed guard that I'm in the parking lot & ready
to be escorted to the building when I arrive for work at this client?"
