A veteran New Orleans police officer pleaded guilty yesterday to orchestrating an elaborate cover-up of a shooting in the days after Katrina in which police gunned down six unarmed city residents, killing two and seriously wounding four.
The development -- which the Times-Picayune calls a "potentially devastating blow" to other officers linked to the case -- is the first plea in a wide-ranging federal probe of several post-Katrina police shootings. The Feds are reportedly looking at possible crimes in both the shootings themselves as well as the subsequent investigations. article continues

What would you expect from a police department whose members have ordered contract killings of witnesses and been videotaped looting after a hurricane?

The New Orleans and Chicago PDs are the Bobsy Twins of police criminality.

Consider at least some of them fried: Article.

"The officers convicted today abused their power and violated the public's trust during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina - exacerbating one of the most devastating times for the people of New Orleans," U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said Friday in a statement. "I am hopeful today's verdict brings justice for the victims and their family members, helps to heal the community and contributes to the restoration of public trust in the New Orleans Police Department."
U.S. Attorney Jim Letten echoed that, saying the verdicts send a message that "public officials, and especially law enforcement officers, that they will be held accountable and that any abuse of power will have serious consequences."
Now -- if we could just get Holder to re-examine the charges rightly brought forth under the Bush administration which he and Obama dismissed without any serious consideration other than reverse discrimination.

And I suppose one of us will have to ask the question ... WHAT ABOUT TAKING A LIFE UNLAWFULLY ... isn't that MURDER? Geesh, these folks (Obama admin) are definitely trying to baffle us with the bulls**t instead of dealing with the ORIGINAL CRIME.

IMHO the charges and trials should have gone like this:

    1. Charge, try and convict on MURDER

    2. Charge, try and convict on CIVIL RIGHTS VIOLATIONS

    3. Charge, try and convict on COVERUP

The first charge/conviction for MURDER upholds and establishes all the other charges ... instead, they are going about it arse backwards! I realize that some of us are really not surprised as this just demonstrates our issues with the Obama admin.

The federal code does not make murder a chargeable offense, except in certain instances involving federal employees during the commission of their duties.

The US attorney CANNOT charge the officers with murder of civilians under federal statutes.
I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, and I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do those things to other people and I require the same of them.

And that begs the next question, where are the local charges? I understand that Martial law is a state pervue, but at the time this incident occurred, wasn't the area declared a Federal Disaster Area, thus the officers were operating under a Federal Mandate? Or, do the states still keep their sovereignty over their LEO? I thought only Sheriff was exempt from being seconded to Federal service?

Ah, well, this administration will do what it wants, regardless of the law and what John Q. Public wants.

What's the status of local, county, and state law enforcement in an area under marshal law? They're not federal employees, but under various emergency powers provisions of federal law, do they not answer to federal law and jurisdiction when the area in which they're operating is under marshal law?

Under 18 USC 242 the death penalty can still be handed out, and should, for these scum.

    Update

    Great response, Gunslinger!

One of the men has been found guilty of lying. Let's check back in March and see what sentence he receives. Admittedly, drive-by shootings are way out of line for the police...
