New gun bills are dangerous, nonsensical
Date published: 2/28/2010

I shuddered as I read The Free Lance-Star's Feb. 16 article titled "Virginia House ready to approve bundle of gun-friendly bills."

How can anyone think that more guns in the general population will help put an end to violence? How many people really need to buy more than one gun a month? Needing more than one gun a month should throw up a red flag that someone has a serious problem.

Allowing Virginians to build firearms of extraordinary power as long as they are never used or taken outside the state is an even scarier proposition.

Why don't we just let people have anthrax as long as they don't use it?

It doesn't take a genius to realize that guns lying around make it a whole lot easier for someone to kill someone with whom he is having a disagreement, rather than solve his problem in a nonviolent way.

When the right to bear arms was written into our Constitution, it was a carryover from England that dates back to the 12th century, when there was no regular army and no police force.

This is not relevant in our present society, where we have both a regular army and various levels of law enforcement. Also, there were no automatic weapons in those days.

It has been proved that stricter gun control reduces crime. Richmond has seen a dramatic decline in homicides since the enactment of regulations to control guns two decades ago.

It's time for people to stop exhibiting a knee-jerk reaction to the scare tactics that are being thrown at them by people who are using fear and false patriotism to promote ideologies for the sole purpose of creating a following that will increase their own personal wealth.

Haha "guns of extraordinary power".

I wanted to go post a comment a say how absolutely perfectly the DC gun ban went. How it stopped ALL the gun violence in DC. When we obviously know that it's the opposite, gun crimes rose, pretty steadily too.

An armed society is a polite society, yes?

Anybody have an account or want to make one to throw. Little light on the situation?

Something I've always known about these kinds of people. It's not enough that they don't like guns and don't want to have them in their life. They don't want you do have them, either. They will use the argument that, "your gun threatens my safety". Maybe.. if they are a criminal and looking to do harm to one of us.

This writer regurgitates in short tight little sentences, the mainstay of the anti-gun crowd. We can argue all we want with them about each and every topical area of the debate and we will never get them to see our position. It just ain't going to happen. The part that always irks me the most is their stance that the Second Amendment is antiquated and of no meaning or use in contemporary society. What they are doing with this is two-fold. They are exhibiting their distain for what they believe to be a misguided and inappropriate relic and more importantly, by dismissing it, they are as mush as saying, "The Second Amendment is not even relevant today, so where is your argument now?". My answer to someone who makes these assertions is, "You never studied history, did you?".

Perhaps the best thing that could happen to some of their ilk is to be viciously attacked by some maggot. Without a means with which to protect themselves, they will quickly find out that they are completely at the mercy of their assailant and that reality bites big time under such circumstances. So if anyone ever sees Miss Katz in the throes of anguish and fear as an assailant tries to make his day while disrupting hers, why not let her suffer her ignorance? After all, she hates guns so much we know she wouldn't want one of us to actually use one... now would she?

Not only would she not want one of us to use a firearm to help her, she would blame the entire incident on the firearm/knife/baseball bat her assailant used, and want them all banned. And probably think the best course of action for the assailant would be some sort of rehabilitation program. :banghead:

Whereas a legally-armed citizen who was willing to help her would be much cheaper and faster, all around.
