New gun bills are dangerous, nonsensical
Date published: 2/28/2010
I shuddered as I read The Free Lance-Star's Feb. 16 article titled "Virginia House ready to approve bundle of gun-friendly bills."
How can anyone think that more guns in the general population will help put an end to violence? How many people really need to buy more than one gun a month? Needing more than one gun a month should throw up a red flag that someone has a serious problem.
Allowing Virginians to build firearms of extraordinary power as long as they are never used or taken outside the state is an even scarier proposition.
Why don't we just let people have anthrax as long as they don't use it?
It doesn't take a genius to realize that guns lying around make it a whole lot easier for someone to kill someone with whom he is having a disagreement, rather than solve his problem in a nonviolent way.
When the right to bear arms was written into our Constitution, it was a carryover from England that dates back to the 12th century, when there was no regular army and no police force.
This is not relevant in our present society, where we have both a regular army and various levels of law enforcement. Also, there were no automatic weapons in those days.
It has been proved that stricter gun control reduces crime. Richmond has seen a dramatic decline in homicides since the enactment of regulations to control guns two decades ago.
It's time for people to stop exhibiting a knee-jerk reaction to the scare tactics that are being thrown at them by people who are using fear and false patriotism to promote ideologies for the sole purpose of creating a following that will increase their own personal wealth.
