Moscow Safeway OC Issues

Well, it finally happened. I was asked to leave a store in Moscow for OCing.

I just got home from Safeway on the Eastside of Moscow, I wanted Tacquitos and salad for dinner so I put on my 1911 and went to Safeway. My roommate and I spent about 20-30 minutes walking around gathering dinner and lunch supplies. We were standing in the checkout line when I was approached by two Moscow PD officers. When I saw them I knew exactly why they were there.

The officers asked me to come aside with them behind the Starbucks counter where we briefly talked. Apparently Safeway management received a "customer complaint" about me. Both officers were very professional and one of the first things the Corporal said was that MPD knows that OC is legal in Idaho but they have to respond to a MWAG call. The officers basically said that after talking with Management that they don't want us to OC in Safeway. An out of sight out of mind policy, if you will. Again both officers were very polite, professional and we were joking about it and talking guns. They did check my ID, which I don't have a problem with.It was to confirm I had a CWP and wasn't a felon, not a big deal. I am sure some will freak about it though.

I was not trespassed but was escorted out by MPD. On the way outside one of the officers joked that Moscow may be in Idaho, but it isn't really part of the State.

In the end, Safeway, not OC friendly, cover or shop elsewhere. Moscow PD, OC friendly and good people, they do prefer that we CC so they don't get called out on such time wasting calls. I am going to go back to Safeway later today or tomorrow and talk with the Store Manager about it, as a former customer I am not very happy.

Glad the LEO's were professional and courteous. Clearly they had a handle on what was what pretty quickly.

Yea, do follow up with the Safeway management and remind em they just lost a customer.

I just oc there like a week ago and had no problem but i was only in there for like 5mins, i guess no one noticed it at all. bummer

I love it. Louie86 and I went in there the other morning right before a range trip. We even had one of the 'managers' ring us up at the checkout counter. I find it hard to believe that they acosted you like that because when we were in there, I was wearing my Glock, a double mag pouch, and had my Multicam BDU pants on.

If that isn't an inconsistent store policy, I don't know what is.

Update:

I tried to contact Safeway's corporate office and get a statement on their policy. The VP of Public Affairs - Brian Dowling is out of the office both today and tomorrow. You can reach him at the following number: Tel: 925-467-3000.

Beware - Their corporate office is in California. Therefore we can probably assume where this one is headed.

Vandal, what happened when you went back and talked to the manager. I went in there the other day (no other option) and noone noticed me till after I had checked out and was headed toward the door. A manager (probably 23-24) gave me a dirty look on the way out but did not say anything.

When I went back in the manager was "unavailable." I have OC'd there a few more times since that event and have gotten a dirty look of two from some employees. I think that MPD may have educated the staff on the legalities of OC and not wasting MPD's time on useless crap.

Interesting progression that you suspect might have occurred there Vandal.

My belief is that is a more realistic hope than that someone will somehow entrap the business or PD into a heinous breach of your civil rights resulting in lots of press, fired officers, recalled officalsand forceful orders to leave the OC people alone!

In Moscow it is not much of a reach. I have seen it happen before on ride alongs with them. Our cops are pretty cool up here where the CA influence is minimal.

So, overall, how friendly is Moscow. What was the joke about it not being Idaho?

I grew up in southern Idaho. The joke there was when you mentioned Moscow someone would ask if you meant Moscow Idaho or Moscow Russia. The standard answer was that there is no difference.

The joke comes from the liberal student and educator population that think they run the town.

Moscow is actually a really nice place to live. Relatively quiet, very low crime and fairly cheap cost of living. Having UI here brings in some interesting events, speakers and the bars are a lot of fun. Check out the Corner Club, my personal favorite.

For 9 months out of the year the students take over the place but its not too bad. The cops keep them under control pretty well. As far as OC goes I have had only this one experience in 3 years of OC

You'll love it...I lived in Moscow until very recently and miss it a lot.

I lived therein the late 90's, and only had a few problems with the locals.

no oc problems, and ccw was a non issue. The loe's were cool then. I had a 4x4 store, and we talked all the time. I sold to some.

They only real problem I had was that I was from CA, and everyone knew it. They wanted my money, and then for me to go home.

which I did, after 2 yrs.

there were many bumper stickers that read, "Cali's. welcome to ID, spend your money and get out"

That's because too many of them move to Idaho (or Utah) and then try and turn Idaho (or Utah) into California. I got so tired of hearing "In California we ...." that I started telling them "if you like California so much, go back."

Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with those who leave California for a better life in Idaho or Utah, just as long as they leave California behind them and don't try and turn Idaho or Utah into what they left.

It's interesting to note this trend with regard to ethnic groups over the last few decades as well. Not just here in the US either, this is an issue in the UK, and France has violent, days long riots in their minority sections of town as well. ThoseEuropean paradise on earth countries are struggling with mosque minaret construction and family honor killings are hitting Europe and Canada as well. There is outrage in Canada that women have to remove their veils to do business with government offices and have their pictures displayed on their DL's.

Now don't get me wrong, I am all for people retaining their ethnic heritage down through the generations and a serious weakness America suffers fromin international business is our lack of multi-lingual skills. It's just that you hear the same start to so many sentences:

In England we all have national healthcare, you must have it here too!

In Russia we all use buses and subways to go to work, it is a crime that America doesn't too!

In Australia no one is allowed to own one of those barbaric guns, America should do this too!

In France, we cannot fire a worker after two years employment (maybe it is three) even if they are always sick ornever work, you should do this too!

In Ukraine all workers get 4 weeks vacation from their first year of employment, America abuses their workers by notmaking that a law! (Aside: Of course they stillare certainwe were blind lucky to have built this country and cannot understand our work ethic.)

Then you find the ethnic enclaves (which aren't so bad in themselves) and meet Chinese, Russians, Vietnamese, etc. who are very proud that they have never learned English and can refer you to people toteach you how the welfare system works here.

Again, don't get me wrong, my wife is Russianbut understands fully where we live and how limited her life would beif shedoesn't work on her Englishand build an understanding of the culture she lives in. We could have stayed over there but the choices were, uh...clear.

So yeah, I fully understand the comment about the transplants who leave one place due to taxes, crime, pollution, unemployment, etc. and then start in with making the new place they chose just like the one they left.
