Hi folks,

I am one of the few remaining conservatives currently living in this cesspool of Socialism called CommieFornia. Well, We are preparing to move ... to KENTUCKY!

Now, I am a very strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment, and it is no accident that we (I) chose Kentucky as my new, and probably permanent home. The choice of where to move ... I didn't know, maybe Arizona,or Texas, or Oklahoma ... Then a friend suggested I look at the Brady Bunch website. He told me that they rate all 50 states according to that moronic group's assessment of each state's GUN LAWS! Well what do you know! Commiefornia is #1! No surprise there. KENTUCKY is #50. The Brady Bunch HATES Kentucky, and instantly made your beautiful state my #1 choice!

Last November, we flew into Nashville, rented a car, and drove to Bowling Green to spend a few days rolling around southwestern Kentucky. we were looking at homes, and businesses, and hospitals, etc. We absolutely fell in love with the area, and the people. We had forgotten that people could be kind and considerate, and polite, and civil! That is something that you just don't see here in The Land of Fruits and Nuts! I didn't even want to return to CA., exceptthat my guns and computers and tools are here, and I'm not leaving THEM behind!

Well, I'll be moving to Kentuky, probably in late summer. I am 51, single, and will be self-employed. My mother is coming also. I want to get her away from the chaos of the infestation of illegals, crime, car alarms, water rationing, obscene taxes, mind numbing traffic jams and rampant Socialism!

So I have been reading things here and from other sources, about gun ownership, open carry, concealed carry and such. Some of the information contradicts other information, and I'm not sure what it true.

What I need, is a checklist of the "Things To Do" that I will need to accomplish, in order to reach the point where I can LEGALLY OC and CC in Kentucky.

I've heard that there is a six month residential requirement before I can exercise this right. I've heard "90 days" and "1 year," and other variations.

Can you GOOD FOLKS and GREAT AMERICANS help me get the skinny on the FACTS?

All help will be greatly appreciated!

For CCDW, you would do best to peruse the Kentucky State Police's website, as they are responsible for administering the licenses.

http://www.kentuckystatepolice.org/conceal.htm

In regards to the question of time frame, to be eligible to apply for a CCDW, one of the requirements is to be a Kentucky resident for at least 6 months. Obviously there are other requirements as well.

Be a resident of Kentucky for at least six months prior to filing the application or a member of the Armed Forces of the United States who is on active duty, who is at the time of application assigned to a military posting in Kentucky, and who has been assigned to a posting in Kentucky for six months or longer immediately preceding the filing of the application; and
(from the page linked above)

Everything else you'll need to know about legal CC in KY is on that page.

As regards to your OC question, there is no time frame. Any person who is not otherwise barred from possessing a firearm can open carry at any time. This includes visitors to KY, new residents, and old residents alike.
Obviously there are KRS (Kentucky Revised Statutes, state laws) that further clarify where you are able to take a firearm and the options available to private business and property owners to prevent it if they so desire.

I believe there are some informative posts "stickied" to the top of the KY board. They have a lot of good information in them.

You can OC anywhere except: Schools, federal buildings, bars, and court rooms.

You can CC anywhere except: (the aforementioned locations), most city/county buildings (look up local ordinance).

There are weird laws pertaining to carry while hunting, in nature preserves, and state fair grounds. It can be argued that these laws cannot be enforced.

There is a rule that says you can't get you CCDW license until you've been a resident for 6 months. From what I understand, you can take the class and have everything in the mail, but don't show up to pick it up until you've been here 6 months.

Welcome to Kentucky!

I tried to take the CCDW class at Knob Creek, but they wouldn't schedule one until I had been a resident for 6 months.

Ended up going with another instructor at a different range, but his schedule was full and had to wait another month. Factor in a couple months for the permit to arrive, and it wasn't until fall that I got the permit after moving here in december.

To further explain the 'bar' point, you can carry into a restaurant here in KY that serves alcohol, but you cannot go into the part that is devoted primarily to alcohol sales. So go ahead and have dinner, just don't 'belly up to the bar'.

On a side note, watch the 'drivers' here. I've never in my life had to avoid so many potential accidents as here, and that's living in DC, Dallas and Denver. KY saw nearly 800 highway fatalities in 2009, obscene for the population density. We've already had 100 people die and it's only March 6th.

It should also be noted that you can open carry into a bar, but the gun cannot be loaded, that is the distinction. But you can have the clip in your pocket.

Chris is right, people can't drive worth a @#$% around here. But I've lived here all my life and have been driving for 16 years and have never had an accident. I've avoided quite a few though, so you just have to be better then they are, lol.

Wow! Okay, I'm going to follow up on this and get everything straight in my own mind. Kentucky's OC and CC policies are so FOREIGN to anything I am used to here in this cesspool of Socialism, it will probably take me some time to become comfortable with either option.

I really don't intend to OC or CC much. I just LOVE the fact that in a free state, it is at least an option!

Hell yah you are going to love this place. I just recently moved here from a commie east coast state and I am having a blast in Kentucky. The gun laws here are top notch and just continue to get better each year. There are several good bills that will be passed this year that should add to that wonderful brady bunch rating.

Plus 1000% on the amazing lack of skill some of these dumb ass drivers have around here. Without a doubt they are the worst I have ever been exposed to. Too many idiots driving with their cellphone crammed in their ear not paying attention to what they are doing. I am simply amazed at how bad they are.

Welcome to teh Bluegrass. I am proud to say I am a natural born Kentuckian, and so has it been for at least 150 years in my family. I take pride in being dead last on the Brady List. And I can definitely say that we are the craziest drivers in the US.

What part of the state did you decided on when finding a place to settle down? In Bowling Green?

so according to Kentucky, I am required to transfer my drivers license and vehicle registration within 30 days but cannot get my concealed license for 6 months?? At least I don't have to take a drivers licensing test like I did to move into Washington. Good thing also that I have a Utah & New Hampshire non-resident concealed license.

We're looking at Franklin right now. I will start my own business, and probably hire one or two people initially to help me. Virtually everyone, upon hearing that I was planning to move there asked, "What will you 'do'?" They were referring to work. Apparently there is not much employment opportunity in that part of the country, but I'm hoping to change that, at least the small part I can change.

I don't need much money. A small business that affords me the spontaneous Big Mac meal deal, a night out with a lady, or a new computer now and then will keep me happy. If I start a business there, I can tell you this. People will be blown away by my philosophy regarding employment compensation. I dare say that, as the owner, I'll probably be the lowest paid employee of the company! If good American folks are going to work for me, I'm going to pay them a wage that will make them very glad to report for work each morning. You won't see me driving a new Corvette, if the people who come to work at my shop each morning are driving Pintos! That's not me!

I really like Mr. Hershey's philosophy. When things were really bad, he could have taken his money and retired, leaving the world to fend for itself. Instead, he dumped most of his money into wages for his employees, and they built a town, Hershey, PA., with homes to live in, and everything else. He didn't sit back during tough times with a big, fat cigar and ignore those who were responsible for his success.

Soon,;) I will run an ad in the local paper there. I want feedback from the community, so I know what direction to take when I arrive. I'm going to ask people to respond to the ad by writing a simple, short paragraph and returning it to me:

"What this (town/city/county/state) needs is a good _____________________"

Based on the responses I receive, I can determine what line of work to focus upon. People might respond, "Drive-In Movie Theater!" or "Welding Shop" or "Ice Cream Parlor" or "Indoor Storage Facility." WHO KNOWS! (I don't, because I haven't lived there yet.)

I'll offer an incentive for responses, with most likely a $100.00 first prize, $50.00 second prize, and maybe a dozen $20.00 and $10.00 "honorable mention" awards, and I'll most likely publish the results in that paper, so that others will have some idea of how to get the economy moving down there by taking some of the suggestions to heart!

We will see what fate has in store for me.

The Drive-In was my idea.... and has been for a while... LOL - I've talked to the owner of a triple screen out here near me and got a lot of useful info.

A drive-in would be great. With today's technology, the experience can be greatly improved.

FIRST, send me a non-disclosure agreement to sign. I'll return it to you notarized, and then you can share your ideas with me. If I incorporate some or all of them, I'll make you a nice royalty agreement you'll love!

Okay. It is official! We're flying into Nashville on August 4th, and flying back to this cesspool of socialism (commiefornia) on ... UGH! Friday the 13th!

We're going to 'wing it.' No hotel reservations or plans. We're just going to drive around KY and TN for 10 days and see if there is any place we must have. We are waiting for the elections in November, assuming 'Big-O' doesn't drive us into a full blown depression before then, and we want to see what the hurricane season will do to that area where the gulf oil is concerned. If crude oil is going to rain down on Kentucky, we'll be looking elsewhere. :(

Then we'll make a final decision, sell these two homes on the Left coast, and move back to America!

Chris, I believe you are incorrect in your fact statement that you can't carry in a bar area of a restaurant. Holders of concealed deadly weapons license appear to be exempt under KRS. Also on drivers, Kentucky has the two highest traveled roads in the US. One being I-75 and the other being I-65. The rate of fatalities in Kentucky versus the traffic flow through the commonwealth is well under the national average according to the national highway statistics organized by the NHTSA. I have lived here for the majority of my life and haven't found driving anymore difficult than anywhere else. Maybe your driving skills are suspect?

You might want to check this out in reference to the concealed carry issues, it's the Kentucky Revised Statute (AKA Ky Law):

http://www.lrc.ky.gov/krs/237-00/110.PDF

It's extensive in nature and full of the information you'll need. I hope that this helps. If you head into the eastern side of Ky., drop me a few lines and if time and schedule permit, I'll gladly meet and greet with you locally, I can even show you a nice ranch-style house if you're interested! *LOL*
