I'm working on a project to try and get a couple of my state's laws improved. I need to get some accurate information on what your state's laws currently are. OCDO is about the best place I know of to find a group of knowledgeable people who are willing to help, so ... specifically:

    1) Does your state criminalize possession of a weapon on school grounds or within 1,000 feet?

    2) If yes, then how does your state define "school" for purposes of the above? Is it just K-12? Does it include colleges? Preschool?

    3) Do you have URLs (links) to the aforementioned statutes or could you give me the reference?

    Thank you very much.

1: If it does, nobody has informed any of our cops, CCW instructors, etc.

    2: See #1

3: Hard to present statutes for non-existent laws.

I'm not aware of any laws on *AZ* books that deal with the 1000ft 'rule'. That would technically still apply from the federal level, as it would in ALL states, but kinda like how California ignores the federal laws that say pot is illegal, AZ seems to ignore the school zone thing.

There are, however, laws in place regarding carry ON school property at the state level. Unfortunately my Google-Fu is failing me, so I'll have to defer to someone else more knowledgeable in that department.

Arizona law only prohibits it when you are actually on school grounds, and even then there are some exceptions, like if your gun is locked in your car, unloaded, and out of sight.

As far as the federal 1,000 foot rule is concerned, I don't know of a single police department in Arizona that gives a crap about enforcing that, or even knows it exists.

Arizona law defines schools as K-12 and include public and private schools. The state law prohibits weapons on school grounds with two exceptions: that the firearm be unloaded, locked in a vehicle, and out of sight that is parked on school grounds, OR the firearm may be taken on campus as part of a program approved by the school. As to colleges and universities, public and private, that depends on the school's policy. Most if not all colleges have "no weapons" policies. Violating them can result in discipline if you are a student or employee. Visitors can be removed from the premises and generally the trespassing laws as well as disrupting an educational institution laws apply. Arizona does not recognize the 1,000 foot federal law. For details, google "Arizona Revised Statutes" go to "Title 13: criminal code," and scroll down until you see the "Weapons and Explosives" section.
