A few yrs ago, I was a chat moderator on another site. We used Windows live messenger for real time communications. Everything was strictly confidential under penalty of death. :shock:We had about 150 Moderators logged on. It worked very well. We used it for training new Moderators. We could set up groups, like the So Cal area, Bay area and so on. It has the ability to block anyone if we find they are trolls or BB's. It also has private messaging too. The interface is very easy to use.

edit: I know every nut and bolt in it so I can help everyone set it up if you aren't familiar with it. I used it for 3 yrs.

Another tool we used for Moderating was a yahoo group. It is also private. Joining has to be approved by the group owner. It works like an email forwarding system. Anything posted to the group can be forwarded to your favorite email acct. It was great for contacting all the members in the group instead of using WLM. WLM is good for real time chat, but the yahoo group was good for mass messaging.
