I just heard about this on Fox news this morning. I know you must have a purchase permit to buy a hand gun but what about the open carry law ? Do I need to have a CCW to carry openly ? I am not sure that I understand this law. Could someone please explain this law to me. I have been wanting to get a CCW to carry but if I can carry openly without a ccw than that's great. Someone let me know how this works.

Have you tried the Michigan forum? On the index scroll down. The states are in alphabetical order (convenient for me in Alabama!).

Welcome!

The Michigan forum is indeed a good place to start. http://opencarry.mywowbb.com/forum30/

But just for general information, a couple things, first, it's not called a CCW anymore. That went out about 10 years ago when licenses to carry became mandatory to be issued to all qualified people. Before then, they were called CCW's and allowed concealed carry of all legal weapons if you were lucky enough to be able to get one. Now, they are called CPL's, and only allow for carry of pistols.

You will be much further ahead to have a CPL, because a CPL allows you to carry openly almost anywhere in the state, aside from private property that doesn't allow it, courts, prisons, secure areas of airports, federal buildings, and in most cases reservation land.

Without a CPL, or with a CPL while carrying concealed, there are many more restrictions. This is a link to a thread with a chart information about where you can carry and how. http://opencarry.mywowbb.com/forum30/36728.html

This is a pamphlet of information intended for new comers to OCing in Michigan. http://miopencarry.org/Attachments/MI_Open_Carry_Info_Pamphlet_Brochure_FLAG.PDF

This is Michigan Open Carry's home page http://www.michiganopencarry.org/

It's a very complicated subject, particularly when you don't have a CPL. So if you are going to carry openly without a CPL, please spend a long, long time researching all of the laws and things. Know it inside and out, upside down and backwards before you even consider doing it. Another good idea would be to go to the upcoming open carrying in Michigan seminar to be held at the Gander Mountain in Utica. http://opencarry.mywowbb.com/forum30/38497.html

Hope that helps. :uhoh:

just need to have a registered pistol in your name to OC(it does not have to be in your name if you have a cpl though)

the cpl isnt required, but reccomended, you can carry in way more places, and you can even opencarry in mostPFZ's with a cpl, where you cannot carry concealed with a cpl,or OC w/o a cpl.

but no,a cpl is not required to open carry in MI

and all local laws against firearms arent enforcable due to michigans 1990 preemption law.

You might also want to know that there is no "Open Carry Law".

Open carry has been legal in Michigan since before Michigan became a state.

We just don't have a law prohibiting it so... it's legal. Michigan DOES have some restrictions on carry though, the biggest two being that covering your gun in ANY WAY for ANY amount of time is considered concealed and is a felony as is getting in /on a vehicle.
