I think it's time the NMforum had a catalouge of our Open Carry experiences.

I'll start.

Open Carried in Hastings the other week, rented a few movies, bought the book "The Revolution" by Ron Paul. Gun was a FiveseveN in a custom leather holster, riding snug at my 4:30. I don't even think anybody noticed.

Gun worn during Hastings visit...

Also Open Carry every day after work, living in an apartment complex I have many neighbors. Most are familiar with me an give a nod, others don't even seem to care or notice.

Liberty is a beutiful thing!

Share yours fellow New Mexicans!

During warm weather, i'll ride around on my harley with my Glock 21 or CZ75 9mm in a fobus paddle; some days I get plenty of looks in traffic, some from cops, and other days nobody seems to care.
Last summer, I was on an off-ramp from I40 going to Wyoming blvd, was stuck at the light, I had a guy roll up next to me, roll his window down (he saw me with my glock) and he said "hell yeah, man, hell yeah!", smiled, and drove off. Was pretty cool. Would be nice if more were openly positive about it like that guy was.

Any/every day that is a non-event is a great day for both both you and OC.

I was out on paseo del norte at the chik-fil-a on saturday, a couple BCSO deputies were there eating lunch and saw me open carrying, one asked to see my ID, understandably enough since I look about 16. after he saw I wasn't actually 16 he patted me on the shoulder and actually said "glad to see a responsible young man open carrying." It gave me a nice warm fuzzy feeling.

They didn't make it a demand and left you with your dignity intact. Good consensual interaction all in all. The contact shows that more and more LEOs are learning the law and not expressing prejudice. I was a good day.

Hey guys, first post here, just thought I'd share.

I have OC'ed once or twice here in Rio Rancho, around the house, to the gun shop and out to the desert "range". I plan to OC as much as possible when I can/feel like it. Unfortunately right now, I only have one pistol in the house, so whenever I take it out, I'm left with that empty feeling of the wife not having a pistol at home (the main reason for getting it)....gotta remedy that problem by buying another pistol!

Just this last weekend however, I was in Tucson, and OC'ed at the car wash, so as not to leave the gun in the car while others have direct access to it! No one even asked about it, much less even noticed....Haha, pistol butt probably offsetted my not-so-manly camera purse/bag slung around my body.

Happy OCing...

Where out in the "desert" can you go shooting? My sister lives in Rio Rancho and when I visit, we could go out shooting...but I do not know the area well-enough to know what you mean by "desert."

Hi I'm new to this sight, but not open carry. Last Saturday I went to Charlies sporting goods open carrying, no big deal. Then the wife and I went to IHOP for breakfast, I got some looks, butno one seemed to care or be nervous. I think most don't notice.I've been open carrying for years in southwest Colorado and here in New Mexico with out a run in with the police or citizens.

I guess I need to get a real man-purse, such as the Wilderness Safepacker! But that'll have to wait until I get my CHL.

As far as the desert "range", it's a spot that is just outside of the city boundary, so legal to shoot at. Lots of folks go out there to shoot judging by all the junk that is shot up and the amount of shells and casings. It's in an arroyo that has a berm to shoot into. I live near King and Unser, the spot is a couple miles northwest from King and Rainbow (dirt road). I can give more details, as long as it's an ok place to shoot.

This gives us an opportunity to talk about the legalities of shooting out in the desert like this. Who knows the law regarding this? Any county laws to be aware of? Even better, does anyone know of a map showing Rio Rancho city boundaries? I found one, I just don't know if it's out of date.

Thanks all
JP

Is the land public or private property?

It is incumbent on each individual to know the laws governing their conduct
Would suggest becoming familiar with the laws of your state first - then expanding your knowledge to include county ordinances and property rights. Note IMNAL and I don't give legal advice.

In my experience most informal ranges in the wild are technically trespassing on the property of someone else.

Not trying to be smart - but you ask too many question requiring in depth responses.
Google is your friend.

JP,

Thanks for the info.

I know where Unser is...been out there a few times, partly to go to theWalmart (and Starbucks across the street on Southern @ Unser), and driving around way out Unser at Paseo del Volcan area.

It sounds like it was in El Paso when I lived there: Texas law says as long as you're outside the city limits and don't shoot across a road, you're free to blaze away. I used to go out in the desert there (hate to go to ranges). And you're right about all the trash and brass/shotgun hulls...but I was reloading then and picked a lot of those casesup -- they became ammo again!

Can't tell you about NM law but as I said -- maybe someone here can help if you can't Google something specific up -- but it does soundlike Texas' law. Whatever, as another poster mentioned, just be sure you're legal out there.

I agree grapeshot, I would like to have concrete info on where I'm shooting at, which is why I am trying to see if anyone has any previous knowledge on it. I just haven't been able to find any info, and honestly have no clue where I can find out who owns a random parcel of land. I am familiar with state laws, and would stop shooting at that spot if it indeed was private land.

I attached a screenshot of googlemaps showing the location, it's where my white cursor is sitting. I know it's hard to make out the location without points of reference...sorry, best I could come up with real quick.

On the other hand, the Del Norte Gun Club range is out this same direction, and I look forward to becoming a member out there sometime this summer, that place looks sweet!

Thanks guys

Possibly, but by then I won't need the informal range, I'd have access to the real one! haha. I will continue to see what info I can gather on "the spot" though.

If any of you all come out this way, lemme know and we will go shoot.....somewhere!

I like to go out to the west side between MDC and Route 66 Casino, ive shot there for years and my friends dad shot there when he was a kid. It's south of the interstate and the range faces south towards a big hill; some people i know call it "rattlesnake hill" because of the snakes out there. We ended up blasting a small rattlesnake several years back out there. I've seen some guys with automatic rifles there too, some fun stuff to watch.

Interesting, so if a private property owner lets you shoot on his property, which is outside of city limits, but still within Bernalillo county...is it ok?

Hmmm....

Edit: sorry, your post on the other thread mentions how you talked to the property owner....
