9mm 124gr +P Winchester PDX1. Developed for the FBI as their standard issue round, the successor to the famous Talons.

I also like the Federal Expanding FMJ rounds when I can find them.

For my Rossi, I use a .357125 gr jacketed hydra shok.

Back in the days when I hunted, I killed a black bear with it. She weighed 215 lbs field dressed. (gutted) When I skinned her out, I found a 13 in. Jello spot just behind the shoulder. So, I guess its an adequate round.

40 grain Hornaday V-Max, 21 rounds in one clip for my FN 5.7 (I'm in Oregon, lawfullly loaded most of the time). Don't be fooled. At 1700 FPS at the muzzle, those 40 grainers will do the job and the muzzle flash/noise looks and sounds like a cannon.

I "switch out" when I head to Cali for business or to visit family and carry 9mm Winchester Silver tips (125 grain I think), 12 of them in one clip. It's a pre high cap ban weapon, one of the first "factory undercover ready" autos (S&W 469) with standard clip that I purchased when I lived in Cali so exempt from the high cap ban per 12020.b.23

JMB was working under military guidelines that required adherence to international agreements.

FMJ has a proven tendency to over-penetrate. Much smarter to use performance or defense specific ammo.

Very true...
Usually I think of what I'm shooting at...

Perp: hollow points or hydrashocks.
Game: ballistic tip fmj rounds.
Thin metal: solid fmj rounds.
Thicker-than-a-car-door metal: steel core fmj *evil grin*

Massad Ayoob recommends carrying whatever the local PD or Sheriff's Department carry. That way you could never be smeared by an anti-self-defense DA or civil attorney for carrying "cop killer" bullets if you should ever have to use your weapon in defense of your life.

Well I'm in trouble on that one if I have a problem in Oregon (safe in Cali as I have 20 round mags and can't take my primary to Cali).

I carry the FN 5.7 which the brady bunch has labeled as "a cop killing gun with armor piercing capability".

They neglect to mention that it's only armor piercing with armor piercing ammo which civillians can't purchase. That's okay though, they're going the way of the dodo bird with their string of failures.

JHPs are engineered to penetrate 10" - 16" with the FBI benchmark being 12". Even that carries some over penetration risk. FMJ penetrates 25" - 30". That's the bad guy, the guy behind him, and grandma down the street. Please reconsider FMJs for anything other target practice.
