I routinely travel near Denver, NC for work.
I always OC my Glock 22 in a Blackhawk SERPA retention holster where I can.
A couple weeks ago I was near the newer Wal-Mart store on Hwy 73 near the intersection of Hwy 16.
I decided to stop in the store and look at some DVD’s during lunch. As I was browsing the DVD’s I hear in a very demanding voice “Sir come over here please!” I turned and smiled at the associate and asked what I could do for him (younger guy with a military style haircut) He asked:
WM: Is that a gun? (No it’s a hair dryer. Why do people ask that?!?)
Me: I smiled and said yes it is.
WM: Are you a law enforcement officer?
Me: No I am not.
WM: You are not allowed to have that in here.
Me: Why not? It’s perfectly legal in NC and this store is not posted.
(This is where it starts to get interesting.)
WM: Well I am aLincoln County Sheriff Deputy and I have arrested people for what you are doing. Now I am just trying to help you out buddy so you don’t get in trouble.
Me: Oh? Can I see your ID please?
WM: Proceeds to pull out a card which does have the sheriff’s office logo on it but does not appear to be an officer ID card it looks more like a youth program or something. He also does not have a badge.
Me: (at this point I am running out of time to be away from work) Well I appreciate you trying to be helpful but what I am doing is not against the law additionally I don’t think you are actually a LEO. Anyway if you want me to leave the store ask a manager to come talk to me and I will happily comply otherwise I am going to finish shopping and be on my way. Have a nice day.
WM: You can do what you want but I warned you!
Me: Thanks. (I walk away at this point)
Anyway I finish shopping without incident and leave the store. As I was pulling out I did see a Sherriff department car pull into the parking lot but they were not going quickly or running lights so I doubt they were coming for me. I wish I had more time to stay I would have liked to get this guy’s name and call the sheriff’s office about him but I will be back at this Wal-Mart again in the future so maybe next time.
Another day in life of open carry it’s always fun lol.
