Well I have been building up the gusto to OC since I have gotten my XDM. Before I felt I would express my right I wanted to become as educated as possible in the instance I would have toanswer formy actions and todefend against possible ridicule. Last evening I had it set in my mind that I was going to sport my 40 out in the public for the first time. I straped on my mag holder and my holster and away I went. First stop was Wendys.

As I pulled in I got cold feet and I started to think to myself about this and that and how some things with OC where still kind of shady to me. I figured instead I would carry my mags and empty holster around to get a feel for it and when I got home I would jump on the internet and try and get the infomation I felt I needed to feel confident going out in the public with my weapon. Behold I came across this site and I feel it gave me the confidence I have needed to complete this. After dinner this evening I went out with the wife and we started at Wal Mart.

She had thought I was crazy for carrying there because the place was packed and talked me out of it. So being that it was my first time and still feeling nerved about it I backed off and went into fail safe mode and just carried my mags and empty holster. My wife has great understanding for the situation but in my opinion does not understand the logic behind it. My word of advice for your first OC is do it with a understanding buddy or by yourself, becauseeven though my wifeis fine with and agrees with owning weapons for hunting and self defense, she only see's the negatives when she feels she is out of her element and me OC'ing thisevening put her there. I was also out of my element so it made it even harder to commit and follow through.

We left Wally World and went on to Menards. Ultimatly this has been what I felt was my safe haven since I had seen another person OC'ing there a little while ago without instance. My wife had asked if I was serious and I was about to back out of it and then I said screw it, this is more then her or my embarrasment. This is about my personnal right to carry arms and to defend my family and myself in all situations. I loaded my XDM and holstered it up and in the store I went. I even threw my big mag on with the 170mm extension to let it hang out there.

Right off the bat I was more in low profile mode as to deal with the excitment and jitters, but as time went on I had gottten more comfortable with it and did my business there. My main objective there was to pick up some bolts I had needed and look at paint. I had walked past a store employee going to the hardware section that gave a double take. Strangely this person kept poping up by me regardless of the section of store I was in as if they were keeping tabs on me. I didn't let it bother me and continued on. By this time I have already been in the store atleast 15 minutes and I was surprised by the lack of attention I was getting other then the store employee. Many people walked right by with no care as to the gun being there and had a few glances, but no double takes. I think this was more due to the majority of the population being locked into a zone in which they are unaware of their surrondings and caught up in what they have going on at the moment, a situation I try to avoid because this is exactly what makes us vulnerable.

Anyways I grab my bolts and look at paint and proceed to checkout. This is wherethe attention was drawn. Standing in line a few people stone cold stopped what they where doing and looked at my gun andtwo guys did the old head nod in agreeance or they really liked my gun. Some of the other check out clerks did the doudle take. The cashier in my isle looked but seemed to be unaffected by it. I walked out of the store witout instance and I felt it was a successful first OC. After returning home and thinking about it I feel proud to have followed through with it, being that I was on the hair line fringe of not doing it. I had also talked about it with my wife and I feel I had clarified it more with her. She states she is going to be uncomfortable with it, but will be supportive of it. So that is my story for the day. Sorry if it is to long, but it felt good to get it off my chest and practice my right.

Since John Menard Jr. founded Menards in Eau Claire and still lives there, maybe he has a soft spot for us Wisco gunners. Never have had a problem here in Beloit yet.

Hopefully he has a 'it just aint no big thang' policy.:D

Congratulations! Isn't it weird how most people don't notice? You would think walking around in public with a full sized sidearm would attract more attention. When I carried in Menard's I don't think anyone noticed and if they did they didn't show it, including the security guard I walked right passed that had a full view because I was carrying ten foot pipes on my weak side. Maybe he didn't want to say anything because he was only armed with a walkie-talkie.

How do you like your XDm? 170mm extension, that's what; 9 extra rounds for the 40 for 25 and one 1 the hole?

Edited to add:
Thanks for sharing your story. When I first became aware of this site the open carry stories were what keep me here especially the first time ones. Hopefully your story will inspire someone reading to exercise their rights also.

thank-you for posting articf7snopro, The first time I oc'd was 3 days after the AG memo last April IN west allis where the police had already made a point of taking down law-abiding oc'ers.

When I got to the parking lot of the store, I went to holster up and ALMOST chickened-out. I KNEW it was legal, I KNEW I had every right to, but I thought maybe getting thrown on the ground and handcuffed wasn't a good idea.

But there was a part of me that would have been SO ashamed of myself if I had 'chickened out'. What free person would be afraid to exercise their lawful rights? Were our founding fathers afraid of standing up to the aristocracy of The King in England? No!! Our founding fathers put their lives on the line for the freedoms (those which our government hasn't yet usurped from us) we have today. If they were willing to put their lives, their future, their families future on the line for freedom. Why couldn't I?

There was no way I was going to leave that parking lot without exercising my right to open-carry. I won't be afraid to do something that was totally legal. I refuse to live in fear. I am a free person. I know my rights, I won't be afraid to exercise them. If my rights are to be infringed, it will have to be by the legislature, NOT by rogue leo's.

We formed Wisconsin Carry in order to, among other things, provide support to law-abiding citizens who's rights are violated. It is your obligation to know the law. It is your obligation to educate yourself on the law and your rights. It is your obligation to live within the law. If you do those things, you have nothing to fear. If you do all of those things and are unlawfully arrested or detained, be assured our organization is positioned to use our resources to protect your rights. I encourage you to consider becoming a member. www.wisconsincarry.org

WELL DONE!

I personally carried in THAT very Menard's store many times while i worked in the area in 2009. Best Buy is another GREAT place to carry, we even have a letter (From Best Buy) on this forum, the link escapes me now, stating OC was accepted at ALL Best Buy Stores.

In addition, I personally carried in, that SAME WalMart. Some assistant manager called LEO and had me escorted out. It took about six(6) weeks, but the ACTUAL manager there welcomed me back with open arms while armed!

You can absolutely carry in the Walmart, I have that from the manager himself.

Great first outing.

Read up, Load up, Hoslter up, and.....

Carry On.

Excellent experience very well told! I think most of us here have gone through the exact same thing as you did. To make it easier on yourself I suggest starting your open carry (life) in stores that absolutely support the law in Wisconsin. Such stores as Gander Mountain where there is a SIGN by the front door that effectively states you have the right to open carry in their stores. Cabela's also supports open carry and I THINK they have signs but I have never noticed them. Another of course is Best Buy and my favorite Starbucks! Target also follows the law as does Walmart and Sams Clubs (but we still run into managers in Wally World and Sams that haven't gotten the message from corporate). Oh, and Woodman's policy is also to follow the law and not forbid open carry. I know there are many more and I do believe the majority of people support the right to keep and bear arms and will agree with what we do.

I cannot get my wife to open carry with me but she does go with me from time to time but...my step daughter who is 18 DOES open carry with me.

Once again congratulations and carry on! It gets easier with each open carry. I highly suggest you join Wisconsin Carry and attend our open carry events. We have another one hopefully the 3rd of April. You may want to get a voice or small video recorder and carry it with you just in case.

Carry on!:dude:

Yep, 26 total rounds for the 40 with one in the hole. I really enjoy the extension, it is fun to shoot with and looks really good with the gun. My concern with it at first was how it would affect the balance and felt recoil of the weapon with the extra weight towards the back of the gun, but it was an easy adjustment for meand I now prefer the setup. Right now I only have one mag with the extension on it. I want to get another one, but Pistol Gear is out of stock on them right now. BTW I put my donation through this morning to http://www.wisconsincarry.organd feel this has been a pretty good start for me.

I regularly carry at that Walmart and Best Buy. Last time I was at Best Buy looking at cameras one of the employees asked how I like my Serpa, that's the only time anyone there has said anything about it.
