I am new to this site, just joined a couple days ago and I see most people are on the same page as myself. My CCW permit is about to arrive any day now and I'm starting to be like a kid at Christmas time. I hope that when my permit arrives there are some laws/regulations Ican read thatI haveto obey. I've been doing some research on wether we can OC in IN. Personally I will CC just because I would like to have the element of suprise, but my dress code for work is business casual and the concealed holster I'm looking at is one of those "inside the waistband" types. Which still shows the grip of the gun. From what I've read the OC is in a "grey area" I have never seen anyone in Lafayette other than a cop sporting the OCwith their pistol.

One other item that mad me scratch my head about the CCW permit in IN was that it's kind of easy to get. I'm originally from MI where you have to do all the paperwork, fingerprints and take a class to show you have the know-how on how to properly handle a firearm. My friend in AZ says you have to do that as well astaking a shooting test. All I had to do was go to the police station fill out the paperwork get fingerprinted and wait. You then get a letter from the local police if you got accepted or not. I was told the local PD always rejects the 1st attempt. Well, they didn't on mine, the police cheif said I was granted my permit because it was my 2nd ammendment right. Awesome!

Last item, (sorry for the long post, work is slow today) Does anyone know where I could take a rifle and do 100+yd shots? I know hunting deer with a rifle is a no-can-do here so I understand why there aren't many rifle ranges. I want to buy a .223 but if I've got no where to shoot it, there's no point in having one.

I don't see OC being a grey area in IN. What you have is a LTCH--License to carry a handgun. There are no IN laws that I'm aware of that address OC, so OC shouldn't be a grey area. If you notice, your LTCH has no restrictions on how you can carry.

Carry on!

Thanks for the info. I have not yet recieved my carry permit, but I always thought it was a concealled carry here. Like I said I've never seen anyone in Lafayette doing an OC yet. I bet if I'm the first, I'll be the first to have the cops called on me. haha Thanks again for the info langzaiguy and Skippy.

Just because you don't see others OC'ing doesn't mean anybody is going to crazy about it (or that nobody else is doing it). I OC regularly in West Indy, Plainfield, never see anyone else doing it but nobody around me really pays obvious attention or acts like they care. A friend of mine did mention seeing someone else OC'ing in a Wal-Mart I frequent, so I know at least one other person around here does.

I OC in Lafayette when I am in town and have never had an issue there. I know of several others who do as well.

With an Indiana LTCH, OC is as "grey" as CC (since neither are addressed - both are legal by default.)

There are actually several deer-legal rifle calibers in Indiana but .223 is not one of them. They are listed in the hunting codes rather than the general firearms codes.

Welcome!

...also, the above link to ingunowners.com seems to have anissue. Lots of good local info there.

What's goin on my fellow OC Hoosiers. I'm new to the site and have a ? I'm one of many repo men here in the state, according to INDOT, carrying in a DOT regulated vehicle in this oh so wonderful state if caught is a Felony....Ya'll gonna laugh at this but I called ISP in regards to obtaining a license or what legalities I needed to work around to carry legally due to the risks of my job....Long story short ISP didn't know shit and told me to call ATF which also didn't know shit (didn't even know it was a felony to carry in dot vehicle) ha ha, they inturn told me to call INDOT, also didn't know anything and passed me along to the Motor Carriers Corp, needless to say I have yet to get the answers I'm wanting to legally carry in my truck.....I've been told by several "cops" in the state that with my job, I do have reason to obtain and would receive "license" that would make me exempt to INDOT regulations.....I'm beginning to wonder if it can even be done legally....I've been researching Federal Regulations which don't effect me but again INDOT is the issue.....any suggestions?

Greetings and welcome. You pretty much have to have the LTCH (Licence to Carry a Handgun) in order to carry a hand gun at all in Indiana. They are not hard to get and now you can even get a LIFETIME LICENCE!! Yes never have to renew it. Well worth the time and effort if you are even considering it I would visit your local law enforcement agency to start the process.

If someone told you that DOT vehicles are off limits even with a LTCH, I'd ask them specifically what statute, code, or law it is so you can look it up. I have read all of the laws I can find in the last several years but have NEVER found anything about DOT vehicles being off limits for carry although I have read that claim before that someones brother told them it was.

Now it may be against your employer's rules or regulations though. I would say it is totally legal that is why ISP and ATF don't know what you are talking about because it is not so. I have a CDL and have never seen anything about weapons in the CDL books but plenty in my work rules and regulations (against company policy does not mean illegal).

I'm not a lawyer but here are the off limits places for indiana:
· In or On School Property.
· On A School Bus.
· In or On Property That Is Being Used By a School for a School Function.
· Private School (IC 20-9.1-1-3) & (IC 35-41-1-24.7).
· Head Start (IC 35-41-1-24.7
· Preschool (IC 35-41-1-24.7).
· IC 35-47-9-1 Allows the carry of firearms by persons permitted to possess and who are transporting
person to or from school or a school function.
· On a Commercial or Charter Aircraft.
· Controlled Access Areas Of An Airport
· During Annual State Fair 80 IAC 4-4-4 (Must lock in Vehicle.)
· Shipping Port 130 IAC 4-1-8 (Controlled by the Indiana Port Commission)
· A Riverboat Casino.

It does not say anything about dot vehicles and I don't think you will find it because it just isn't so.

Don't take my word for it because I was wrong once, read the Indiana Code IC,
http://www.in.gov/legislative/ic/code/title35/ar47/index.html

look at the law summaries on this site: http://www.opencarry.org/in.html

ON the Indiana Gun owners forum lots of very knowledgeable people there: http://ingunowners.com/forums/general_firearms_discussion/16185-ingunowners_faqs_sticky.html

and on http://www.handgunlaw.us

There is also a good indiana handgun law book written by a lawyer:
http://www.amazon.com/Indiana-Handgun-Law-Bryan-Ciyou/dp/0978627695

Once you start reading and learning you will be surprised how many of the things people claim about handgun laws are just not so mostly because they vary so much from state to state.

There are many places to shoot long guns in Indiana. Google "Indiana DNR ranges" and there is a big list. Also there are many private clubs which usually cost about $100 a year for unlimited access.

Open Carry is just as legal here in Indiana as Concealed Carry is, all you need is a LTCH.

If Indiana would require a class, our permit would be recognized by more states. Traveling to Ohio and South Carolina I wasn't able to carry because our permit isn't recognized. I understand that the permit itself is the antithesis of the 2nd Amendment, but it would be a benefit to permit holders.

It is obnoxious to our God-given rights that we even need a permit (read government permission) to carry (see my topic "Time to ditch LTCH?" on that).

Having said that, if we could get our mommies at the state house to eliminate the requirement for it here, I'm sure we could come up with a purelyoptional permit system that would satisfy other states' requirements.

I agree, it is obnoxious for any politician to think that any human on the planet does not have the right to defend their gift of life with any weapon they choose.

However, it is our responsibility when we carry to train, and without classes being a requirement, it would make huge improvements in the skill level of permit holders. If classes are out of reach financially, then performing draw and shoot drills as often as possible are a must. Unfortunately, simply going to the range and emptying magazines into a target isn't enough.

If you can shoot outdoors, take it over indoors. I've taken guys to an outdoor range after they were emptying magazines into very small groups at an indoor range. At the outdoor range, without the walls of the indoor range lanes closing in the peripheral vision for them, they couldn't hit the target at the same distance.

Shoot as often as you can, and as another gentleman on here has stated, only give someone their share of lead when they more than deserve it.
