Questions from a newbie

I'm new here and just learned today that Michigan allows OC. I HAD NO CLUE! I have friends that CC, but I just thought, like a zillion others, that it was illegal. In fact, one of my friends who CC's said that it's important that you never allow it to be seen accidentally, per the rules of having a CPL.

I have a few questions: First, the reason I'm replying to Roblamont80 (I accidentally replied to him on another thread - List your open carry stories here) is because I tried to see the Home Depot vid everyone is talking about and it has been taken down. Any way I can still see that somewhere?

Second, I'm a female <gasp!> :) Are there many females who OC or on this board? I'm extremely passionate about our rights and will do just about anything to make sure we exercise them regularly!

Third, I was wondering if there is a conflict with OCing and having a CPL?

Thanks for the AWESOME and informative site! I just love all the documents you provide. I have downloaded a lot of them (and printed hard copies as well).

Read through all the stickies at the top of the page. You can learn a lot about OC there. To answer one of your questions, having a CPL makes it easier to OC because it allows you to carry openly or concealed in the areas listed in MCL 750.234d, and openly in the concealed pistol free zones (MCL 28.425o). There is no law on the books that says you must conceal if you have a CPL. It just gives you the option to do so.

Welcome to OCDO. Anyone who tells people that "you never allow it to be seen accidentally" needs to be taken to task and corrected. Not only that try to find the source of that incorrect statement and make sure the the source is corrected. We need to work harder to eliminate the total lies that some people espouse as facts on open carry.

Welcome aboard!

Please note that while a CPL greatly expands the places you can OC, there are still several locations that you cannot OC even with a CPL. This may not be an exhaustive list, but includes the following (perhaps others can chime in):

Post Office (or other federal property, but parks are ok)
Federal Reserve Bank in Detroit
Courts
Jails
Casinos

As mentioned earlier, as a CPL holder, please note that 750.234d and 750.237a (K-12 schools) does not apply to you, but if you are stopped when OC in a PFZ, you may wish to show your CPL to the officer to get out of a (bogus) citation.

Note that you are still restricted for CC (but not OC) by 28.425o.

Whenever someone tells you that a thing is illegal, demand they cite the statute! For your reference:

Thanks everyone for your warm welcome and suggestions. :D I have been reading a ton from this site and I'm fascinated by all that I'm learning.

I'm currently listening to the Home Depot story by Warchild. I hope that I can be calm in a situation like that. I'm Italian and use my hands A LOT (besides I'm also afraid that I would raise my voice), so I hope that I could handle it half as well as he did. Perhaps they wouldn't be as worried about a 5'2" woman as they would a man (especially if they had disarmed me), but I still need to work on that, I fear. :?

Welcome to the forums, Jen.

Always glad to see new people.

I'd chime in something, but everybody covered everything.

Hope to see you at a meet!
