I read in another post that someone was asked to leave this store for OC, since this is my regular shoppe I decided to give it a go; this was not an attempt to provoke a reaction, I genuinely needed some things. This is what I discovered while I was shopping.
As I was entering the store, there was a charity table raising money for breast cancer patients. My mother was a breast cancer patient at one time, so I figured what the hell. I approach the table and the woman was a little apprehensive to give her pitch to me. I greet her with a friendly smile & hello, I say I would like to donate and offer $5. she goes to hand me a raffle ticket And I said, I didn't want anything in return. I figure if I'm escorted out, the people at the charity table might get a little miffed since I gave a donation.
Next thing I notice was an elderly woman in one of the store's electric chairs straining quite hard to get something off the shelf that is just out of her reach.. I see this from about half the length of the isle, she looks at me as if she's hoping I may offer to help her, then notices that I'm armed and obliviously reacts with apprehension. I walk over to her and help her get the item that she needs. Then I ask her if there is anything else she needed help with and walked with her while she finished shopping helping her get things a bit out of reach. I also figured that if a manager where to ask me to leave the store, they would probably be a bit embarrassed to do it to someone being a gentlemen another customer.
I was observed by several employees and a manager who saw what I was doing and never approached me at all. Though there was defiantly some concern over a man with a firearm.
What I learned from this is that armed citizens who openly display their firearms, have to rise above the ordinary citizen. remember, most ordinary unarmed citizens are self-centered, rude, inconsiderate and sometimes obnoxious people. If we are going to separate ourselves and demand that we be treated equally, we have to rise above that or proprietors will only have an excuse to treat us the way they would probably like to treat a lot of other people.
If the larger public perception is that ordinary citizens who are armed are often polite, helpful, selfless and caring individuals, it will be very hard to disrespect them without alienating the people who appreciate their positive and openly civic minded attitude.
