Firearms have been sold in select post and base exchanges for at least 30 years. Currently firearms and ammunition are sold at 20 AAFES locations.
They are:
Eielson AFB
Elmendorf AFB and Fort. Wainwright, Alaska
Fort Rucker, Ala.
Little Rock AFB, Ark.
Eglin AFB, Fla.
Fort Leavenworth and Fort Riley, Kan.
Fort Campbell, Ky.
Barksdale AFB, La.
Whiteman AFB, Mo.
Fort Drum, N.Y.
Offutt AFB, Neb.
Nellis AFB, Nev.
Holloman AFB, N.M.
Minot AFB, N.D.
Fort Knox, KY.
Fort Hood, Tex.
Hill AFB, Utah
Fort Belvoir, Va.
Areas of exchanges setup to sell firearms have to adhere to more rigid safety requirements and setup follows controlled timelines and check-offs for bringing firearms onto the installation. These include: command, fire marshal and security officer approval; a federal firearms license; an electronically-monitored gun safe or vault; firearms fixtures, control counter and trigger locks on all guns; qualified and trained sales personnel and instant background checks on potential buyers through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
"Safety is the number one priority," said AAFES spokesman Judd Anstey. "As such, PXs and BXs work continuously with federal and installation authorities on security procedures." T.P.
