I attended many, many open carry events during the last 6 months. Not once, any news report willing to show my face...may be my skin is yellow and not white. I could see my Glock, S&W and XD from the back or the side; but, never with my face from the front. May be I'm just too homely for them. This totally suck...we need to show faces across all race when comes to gun ownership in America.

It could be a numbers thing. There are so many more people who do not have the same ancestry as you.

Suggestion: Be the person who contacts the TV news reporter about the next event that you attend. You will likely become the point of contact for the reporter and will get a chance to express yourself on camera.

Don't wait for things to happen. Make them happen.

I agree. Often, the media loves to tie firearms ownership with old crusty white guys. This makes it more acceptable to denigrate those who do so.

Firearms ownership has nothing to do with demographics. Race, religion, orientation have nothing to do with the ability to defend yourself. If more minorities were portrayed as owning and carrying firearms, it might lead to a greater number of them doing so.

Unfortunately for the media, this would have a tendency to remove the focus of gun ownership from middle aged white males, making them less able to criticise firearms owners.

I agree with eye95. Actively pursueany reporter or media contact you encounter. If gun ownership is for everyone, it should represent everyone and exposure shouldn't be limited to white guys only. You never know, you could become the next face of the OC movement. It doesn't have to be a white dude.

this is the same thing as what happened with the guy in AZ who was carrying the AR-15 that got so much media buzz at the time. while the left-wing media was screaming 'crazy white guys with guns', they left out (and edited out of the pic) the fact that the guy was a black man.

if it doesn't fit their agenda they will ignore it.

Maddoggie, maybe your heritage IS the story. Contact the media and try to get them to do a story specifically on folks who OC who are not white males.

Yes, remember all the hoopla about the fellow who was carrying an AR-15 at an Obama rally last year? The only place where you say his face (or could even tell his race) was in the pro-2A press. Almost NONE of the MSM revealed that this "radical gun toting Obama Hater" was actually a BMWAG. About the only one that even mentioned his race was CNN, and even that was just mentioned in passing:

    http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/08/...protest.rifle/

    http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/08/...e/#cnnSTCVideo

You'll notice that although CNN's Rick Sanchez makes a big deal about the fact that this guy is carrying (and even makes a deferential reference to the fact that in AZ it is 100% LEGAL) they only mention that this fellow is "African American" once. They never accuse him of being some sort of racist, like they always do with white citizens when they do the same thing...

It is particularly telling that they show his picture, but didn't actually interview him. Then they go on to speculate which "side" he is on and what his motivations are, rather than just ASKING him. They were close enough to get footage, but apparently, it is no longer a jurnalist's job to actually INVESTIGATE the news, or do interviews.

They keep saying that "there is an Open Carry Law in AZ that allows this"...

    NO THERE ISN'T!!!!!!!

There is an Open Carry RIGHT enumerated in the US Constitution. No government has the moral or legal authority to "allow" a fundamental human right...

There is now statute, code, or law in AZ (or ANY state for that matter, except with regards to CA and their silly UOC law) that says that it is legal to OC. It is the LACK of PROHIBITION on OC that makes it legal in many states. These media putzes need to go back to high school civics class and re-learn how the American legal system works.

I find it morally reprehensible that the media is portraying OCers as being entirely white, redneck, uneducated and "radical right wing extremists". From what I've seen in VA, and NC, OCers are men and women, all races, all different levels of education and income, and are generally friendly, well-spoken, courteous and family-oriented.

The media is either stupid, or they are evil. Neither are good explanations for their behaviour, IMO, and we need to start calling them out on their intellectual dishonesty in an open and public manner...

I'm with you. No one is running to interview the 6'2" 250 lb Puerto Rican with a 1911 on his hip.

What's best is when I completely buck their stereotypes by riding in on a Harley softail. Only old white guys ride those...

    1. In my considerable experience, there is a STRONG streak of racism in the anti-gun movement. A lot of them aren't afraid of guns. They're afraid of non-Whites with guns.

    2. To a large extent, the commercial media are in the tank for the anti-gun movement.

If you're pushing gun control as a way to disarm "them" whom you don't want to have guns, why show "them" in possession of guns while NOT committing violent crimes?

    You do the math.

Gotcha. I thought you may have meant me. I musta reread my posts a hundred times, wondering what I could possibly have said.

It's cool. Yes, the many in the media (not all) are hypocritical..

My fault for not explaining why I highlighted those lines.

It's a shame that the OP has to take extraordinary measures in order to get the news media to acknowledge him as pro 2A. The main reason isto furthertheir agenda to demonize firearms and firearms owners. They want to give the impression of being champions of human rights and at the same time support a controlling socialist agenda.

Another angle on race I think about is I bet there are black men who are afraid to OC because of law enforcement in some areas. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

I think you are right. I was scared enough to OC in Colorado my first few times. I'm as white as can be- the "Good Ol' Boy" looking type. I couldn't even begin to imagine the feelings that a minority feels when attempting OC.

A good example of this is the recent Michigan open carry movement. Open carry in Detroit draws some serious attention- not all positive. I can see a LONE black man, OC; getting drawn on and put to the ground for a 'quick investigation' before being released. It's bad enough for white people trying to OC in Detroit; forget being Black or Mexican.

I think it'd be a great thing to show some more diversity. Then it'd be harder for the media to stereotype gun owners as a big group of racist rednecks. I shoot regularly at sharpshooters in Lorton VA and i think its great to see all the different groups of people coming in and enjoying their freedoms given to them by the sacrifice of many men before them. The staff is multi racial to and are as patient as can be even with some customers ive seen that were relatively hard to understand. It's funny how much hell i catch at work being first generation Korean driving a large truck with my Sig Sauer sticker on it and always trying to get some of the younger soldiers to go to the range with me. anyway yea its not just white people that responsibly carry and own guns i'd like to see the media show people that more often.

I think you are completely correct, and not just about LEO's. When an LEO gets a MWAG call, they send one cruiser and two cops. But if they get a BMWAG call, it's "all bets are off"...

And I think that your average soccer mom lefty gun hater is a LOT more likely to make a MWAG call when she sees an African American 20-something male OCing than she would a guy like me, who is 40-something, with short hair, glasses and a button down shirt and chinos...

If you listen closely to the language the anti's use it's VERY telling as to what their REAL agenda is. They are always saying "we don't want to take guns away from legitimate sportsmen (read: rich white guys who belong to a trap and skeet club), we just want to get guns out of the hands of the wrong kinds of people..."

And I think we ALL know what they REALLY mean when they say "the wrong kinds of people". These racist anti's need to be called out for the pro-slavery scumbags they really are. Because we all know the words of Andrew Fletcher, the Scottish writer and patriot from the 1700s:
"And I cannot see, why arms should be denied to any man who is not a slave, since they are the only true badges of liberty."
Almost EVERY gun control law that has been passed in the last 100 years in the US was racially motivated, and almost EVERY single one of these laws were passed by Democrat-controlled legislatures.

The "Left" has a long and well-documented history of racist gun laws. And they are still working on adding to their record. You don't see any Dems in New Hampshire or Alaska or Kansas pushing for tougher restrictions (states which are predominately white). The places where you see Dems pushing for these increased restrictions are in states and cities that have large populations of minorities--the City of NY, Baltimore, DC, Chicago, Detroit, and states like CA, IL and MD..

Let's call it what it is, folks. The "left" is a racist conspiracy hell-bent on disarming the poor, women, and non-whites. This is a simple, documentable, historical fact. It's time we call them out on it...

Good thread... I agree, it would be nice to see more diversity in the OC movement. Not that that diversity isn't there, it is, but it would nice to see that reflected in the media. Just about every news story video I've seen in the last few months, whether it's skewed pro or anti, portrays the Open Carrier as the Middle-aged White Guy.
BTW I started a similar (less well received: http://opencarry.mywowbb.com/forum65/41062.html)thread a while back. I'm glad yours is going better.

Yeah. It says that it wasn't beneath the dignity of that officer to spend some quality time with one of his community's younger citizens.
