Hold safety in your own hands
Tom Koenninger was right in his April 28 column, “No need to brandish guns,” on open carry of guns — unless you need one. As a police officer for over 20 years, I can tell you that you cannot depend on police to protect you from danger. Courts have ruled that police have no duty to do so.
Koenninger’s original “premise” and follow-up statements are ludicrous. If carrying a pistol in the open is “intimidating,” then police do it every day. True, we no longer live in the Wild West — now criminals carry automatic weapons and pistols that fire more than six shots. I have a concealed carry permit and do so. I don’t carry to scare anyone nor to show my “superiority,” but I have “brandished” a weapon to protect myself and to protect a woman from assault. Koenninger appears to live in his own little world that anytime could be shattered by crime. The worst feeling is to be a victim of someone who holds your life in their hands and there is nothing you can do about it. And it could be your last feeling.
