NOTE: We need more pro-gun letters to the editor like this - short, to the point, always less than 200 words, make one point. These letters do impact policiy makers trying to take te temperature of public opinion and guage how logical nd arguable pro-gu policy positions "are."

Hold safety in your own hands

Tom Koenninger was right in his April 28 column, “No need to brandish guns,” on open carry of guns — unless you need one. As a police officer for over 20 years, I can tell you that you cannot depend on police to protect you from danger. Courts have ruled that police have no duty to do so.

Koenninger’s original “premise” and follow-up statements are ludicrous. If carrying a pistol in the open is “intimidating,” then police do it every day. True, we no longer live in the Wild West — now criminals carry automatic weapons and pistols that fire more than six shots. I have a concealed carry permit and do so. I don’t carry to scare anyone nor to show my “superiority,” but I have “brandished” a weapon to protect myself and to protect a woman from assault. Koenninger appears to live in his own little world that anytime could be shattered by crime. The worst feeling is to be a victim of someone who holds your life in their hands and there is nothing you can do about it. And it could be your last feeling.
