Is there anyone else that plans on shooting on Fort Lewis Range 15 this summer? Either you have to have an military ID or go with someone that has one and be a guest. I have my ID and permit to shoot on post, as a side note: before going on the post a person has to register their weapon with Fort Lewis. One thing is they now have moving targets, half silhouettes. If you have ever been military you have seen them. Here is the link http://www.jblmmwr.com/skeetnpistol.htm If anyone plans on shooting here this summer let me know. For rifle they have out to 300 yards.

Well, that ~is~ something new! I wonder how they'll set the range up, need to check into that.

Something else for folks to consider - registering your weapon means JBLM will maintain your info in a database, WITH photo, if I'm not mistaken.

Not sure what JBLM is but you are correct they will have the S. Number and description of the weapon on location. They also do have my photo as I have Department of Defense ID card. If a person came on as a guest only the gun would be registered. You do have a valid unstated concern that is why a person may decide to only bring one of his guns to the range and leave the others at home and not registered on post. Don’t forget when a pistol has been bought through a gun dealer (store) it has been registered there to the person buying it.

Who isto know or not that I have two of the same pistols and only bring one to post, practice to become proficient with that weapon and not bring the other as to keep the S.N. off any registry?

With all that said I will be going if anyone is interested. There is not much better than being tutored by S.F. or a sniper. They shoot up there also. and a 300 yard rifle range is nice also. I can't think of any place else that has moving targets. Just an offer and something to think about.

Very Good Point! And another thing for all to think about. I already have.

Toney, have you not been in the military? If not the targets ride on a chain driven track moving left to right or right to left. I’m not sure if they also have the multable person targets or not like in trainning. While in the Army I have had the opertunity to shoot at many ranges from the United States to Germany. It sharpens your skill not knowing where the target pops up at and moves. I have to find out if they are all at the same yardage or if they are in 50 yard incraments like the rages I have shot at. Those ranges were great from 50 yards to 550 yards the targets would pop up and down or pop up and move. Once in a while a tank target would pop up and move but that is doubtful they will have that for non military.

Thanks G20, I'm still not use to calling it that. It's been 30 years when I was stationed there and then it was one or the other. I live about 2 or 3 miles as the bird flies from the explosive range (C-4, Comp-B so on) and it is real easy for me to get there in a few minutes by the east gate.

Hi jcsftwre- yes, I am very familiar w/Range 15 and am retired military... currently work on base (hard not to call it a "post" or just plain ole' "Ft Lewis")... would be glad to meet you sometime.

One benefit of coming through the "ROY" gate is you do not have to (technically) pass through a control point and be subject to vehicular search. 'Course, if you're doing the right thing, that's not a problem anyways.

Being familiar w/Range 15, I am curious as to how they plan to incorporate moving targets into the existing fan of fire - will it be to the right side of the range (longer distance/high power rifle); in the middle (new lanes of fire replacing existing shorter distance targets) or on the left (where the traditional "silhouette" targets are hung)?

:celebrate

Oh - and my unstated concern is that maintaining a database of owner registration is contrary to federal law...

Tony,

First sorry for sneaking in an “E” in your name Tony. I haven’t seen how they have made the targets work for this range but I have used them many times in my life while I was in the Army. I have the stickers on my van’s window that allows me on post (your right about calling it post) and I have military ID because of my disability rating. I receive the same as being retired (and on some things more). I plan on shooting a lot there after I get my new pistol this Wednesday. I bought a XDM 9mm (Springfield Armory) not the compact but the one with 4 ½ inch barrel. I just can’t give up the accuracy at distance for a smaller weapon. I see what you said about federal law and keeping a database. I didn’t know that is in conflict with law. Crap there is a lot of things I don’t know really but I will keep in touch with you if your interested in going together sometime. Do you have your ID for being retired? If not it’s free to get and at the same time get your sticker for your vehicle. I drop you an email after I have things done and either I have gone or going. I need to register my new pistol with them and then I can start practicing.

If your retired you and I should be about the same age maybe? I just turned 50 in April.

Anyway we will keep in touch.

No worries, Rick - I have been called many things... long as it ain't "late to supper." :D

Nice thing about pop-ups or moving targets in general is it lends to realism in training.

I see you have a motorcycle - that's another hobby of mine as well.

Drop me an email sometime, we should get together for a range day and a burger or sumpthin'. We're close to the same age - I got started young. :)

Today I looked over the regulation governing weapon registration, and it would appear that they ensure the record is deleted if/when you transfer the weapon - so it would "technically" be legal. I have registered my weapons with post wherever stationed, so it's no great concern to me - but would want folks to know about it in advance. I could be wrong about visitor registration... could always call and ask... maybe I'll do that tomorrow. I ~do~ know they don't want the weapon brought in for registration, so if anyone is considering this, be aware of the rules!

NO loaded weapons, and they must be transported in such a manner as they are not within easy reach, in a separate container (I usually bring a gun case and a separate ammo can, transported in the trunk).

As Rick noted, Range 15 is a nice, safe place to shoot, with a range safety officer and established command/control. Typically they allow ~five or ten minutes of shooting, followed by ~five minutes of downtime for target set-up/retrieval. Cost to use the range is $4.50 each for active/retiree's - not sure if it's more for visitors/guests.

Sounds good Tony. I do like to ride but that is very limited because of my back. I have “A Lot” of things wrong with it so the VA makes sure I’m highly medicated as not to feel the 8 nerves that are currently being pinched. (I have another VA doc appointment today) I have to wait until me brother moves here to help me after the surgery. Anyway so I’m limited to about 1 1/2 hour one way then I need to get off and stretch and take a few of my meds. Then I’m good for another 1 ½ hour. If I ride longer I need to bring a cane to walk after. It sucks.

The cost is .50 cents more for guests and or visitors not bad at all. It sounds like the range is run pretty much that same as when I was in so knowing this it will not be to bad at all.

Hey M1Gunr,

Thanks for the link and info. One thing I was not aware of was having to wait for the paperwork to come back after registering and before going on post. So I guess I have to wait a little longer. I get my new pistol the 5[suP]th[/suP] or 6[suP]th[/suP] of this month. (tomorrow or the next day) I need to get the S. Number from it so I can put it on the form and take them in. I think it will work out just fine by the time I get my paperwork back the weather will be warmer. After that I know I’ll be at range 15 a lot.

UPDATE....

I just finished a lengthy phone call with the Provost Marshal & with NW Adventure Center. Here is the info on gun registration.

Military assigned to & folks residing on Ft Lewis / McChord must register their weapons with the Provost Marshals Office.

Civilians & retired military must register their weapons at the NW Adventure Center
http://www.jblmmwr.com/nac.htm

You use the same form: http://www.lewis.army.mil/des/vehicle registration/HFL 816-Registration of Personal Firearms PDF.pdf

I also found out you do not have to use the front gate(if you need a pass), you are allowed to enter through the East Gate off Hwy 507.

Weapons must be cased and unloaded. Civilians without an escort may use the range.

Rifle and Pistol Range
Do you enjoy shooting, but have a hard time finding a relaxing, safe, and legal place to let a few fly? You should check out Range 15 at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. We have a safe and fun place to spend some time perfecting your marksmanship, teach a youngster the finer points of the sport, or just spend a warm afternoon of plinking away.

Our official Army range is nestled on the small arms impact area, next to Joint Base Lewis-McChord qualifying ranges, making it extremely safe for shooting out to 300 yards. Along with the shooting line, we have a range shop, where you can pick up cleaning supplies, a box of ammunition when you run low, or just a soda and chips if your tummy starts growling (which is bad for accuracy, it’s a proven fact.)
Pistol shooters can take advantage of our 10 and 20-yard berms and soon one out to 35 for our hawkeyes working on accuracy. Our rifle shooters can shoot at targets all the way out to 300 yards. For all our shooters, we will be offering a new option, action targets. For those wanting more excitement than just punching paper, we are going to offer the chance to shoot at our flipping targets. Specially designed from a polymer plastic that allows the bullets to pass through with little damage to the target and no possibility of ricochet back at the shooter. They swing and twist and give you instant feedback of a hit or miss.

As of March 11th 2010 if you live off post you no longer have to register on Post. The memo is signed by BG Mathis. So when I go to range 15 I put my unloaded guns in the back of the car and roll.

You have a copy of this memo?

In my post I was repeating what the Provost Marshal said.

Yes I do, pdf file. When I called PM the person who answered didn't know about it, she had to check with supervisors.

That ~is~ good news [memo]. Might have to get a copy of that memo and keep it with the weapons just-in-case.

Did anyone ask about the moving targets? Didn't get a chance to call, myself - kinda' busy lately...

I thought about this last night and am thinking you might be reading that memo wrong. You may not have to register the weapons if living off post BUT if you plan to carry them ON post I bet they still have to be registered.
