About to Pass Open Carry in Oklahoma!

Open carry has been approved by the House and the Senate in Oklahoma, it is now waiting on the Governor's signature to be signed into law. Everyone expects that he will sign it, otherwise the Legislature has the votes to override his veto.

Open carry is new to us here, and I have some quesitons Iam hoping you can help me with.....

After passing open carry in your state did you see more businesses put up signs banning carrying of firearms into their establishment?

If a private business bans firearms and you concealed carry into their business and they find out, what is the recourse? Can they only ask you to leave? Are you breaking a law?

How often do you actually see other people using open carry when you are out at the mall or Wal-Mart or just around town? Every day? Once a week?

When you personally open carry do you every get stopped, either walking on the street or pulled over, by a police officer just to check your license?

When your state first allowed open carry how long did it take for the public to adjust to the shock factor of seeing people walking around with guns?

The answer to your questions are mostly area specific so you will have to wait and see. Read the law, are the police allowed to stop you just to check for a license?

I can only give a general answer, as I'm not familiar with Oklahoma law.

A) Open Carry has been legal here for as long as I can remember, so I don't recall. There are very few businesses that actually have signs up. Most of them are malls or doctors offices, but not all doctors offices and malls have the signs.


If a private business bans firearms and you concealed carry into their business and they find out, what is the recourse? Can they only ask you to leave? Are you breaking a law?

A) If they find out, they can simply ask you to leave the property. A business cannot make it illegal to carry on the premises, but they can make it a policy. If you're carrying concealed, they're probably not going to find out. The only way you'd be breaking a law is if you refuse to leave when asked, and that would be a trespassing law you'd be violating.

A) Once in a while. I'd say maybe once or twice a month, and I'm a pretty busy guy. I've seen open carriers in Wal Mart, Target, Safeway, QFC, Fred Meyer, and a few other businesses. I've seen some OCers walking their dog out in public as well.

A) I've never got stopped, because in Washington, you don't need a license to open carry. A few years ago, I was told by a Target employee that my firearm was "startling" some other employees, and asked me to leave it in the car, however, I believe Target's corporate policy is to abide by state law, so the employee was in the wrong.

A) There are still many, many citizens who aren't aware that a citizen of Washington can open carry. Many are not aware, and will often ask if you're a police officer.

VAopencarry- I understand that many of the questions are area specific, I'm just looking for general info. Like how those things affectedor do affect you in your state. I am just looking for a good crosssection view of how people react when they see people using OC. I think many people in Oklahoma are under the wrong impression that as soon as open carry is law they'll begin to see hundereds of people a day walking the street with a gun on their hip. That's why I asked how often you see people wearing guns.

As for me... I don't thinkI'll ever open carry when I'm in public, except for when I'm at the lake fishing. However, I do like the open carry law, that way when I'm carrying concealed I don't have to worry about my shirt riding up and my gun being exposed. With open carry it wouldn't matter.

Sure you'll be able to go toa state web site (Attorney General's) and find the law once enacted. Your state will spell out where you can carry.

Never been comfortable with people seeing me OC andknow when I get to my car I have to unload and store the weapon for transport. Between that and the attention it draws I prefer to carry concealed.

Sooner or later you we be confronted when OCing. Keep in mind if asked to cover your weapon you can't without a carry concealed permit.

If this law is signed the OP could not even OC without a permit in OK.

Ireside in both Colorado Springs, and Arlington. Texas.This amounts to as much contrast on the OC option as one can experience.

I predict very few OK working folks will OC- except on days off, & outings. As I've found in CO Springs, depending upon your demeanor, dress, behavior,and overall temperment you will either receive little or no attention OC'ing in OK - or a experience problems when shopping.

I would simply respond-if asked - "I am armed under the authority of the State of Oklahoma" - period - and leave it at that. If asked if I am a police officer- I may respond - "Retired"- depending upon whether I want this to be a teaching moment or not. I AM RETIRED- so it's a truthful response, even if a bit misleading. If you ARE a police officer out of uniform you have no legal obligation to produce your badge - except voluntarily as a gesture of courtesy.

CONGRATULATIONS OKLAHOMANS !

In Oklahoma you have to have a concealed weapons permit to carry a gun concealed or open carry. One permit is all you need and it covers you both ways. The way the law is written all current concealed carry license holders will have the option of carrying their weapon concealed or open carry.

And as far as where we can/can't carry. The law is the exact same for open carry as it is for concealed carry. The bill says that anywhere you can carry concealed, you can also carry openly. If you can't carry concealed to a place (bars, casinos, govt buildings, town meetings, and schools) you can't carry openly.

I for one am excited that we Oklahomans are standing up for our rights. I do hope the governor signs this into law. It helps, I think, that former Gov Nigh and his wife, now both in their 80's were robbed and were forced to the ground at gun point in their own driveway in a very swank neighborhood. IF either one had an open carry weapon, the odds are the criminal who they saw coming would have kept on walking and not bothered them. Open carry deters crime, every time it is tried. I urge everyone that might read this post to call the gov, at 1-800-865-5853 and urge him to vote for HB 3354, for open carry in Oklahoma. Thank you
