[line]1 Dead; 1 Injured In Powhatan Stabbing

The following is a release from the Powhatan Sheriff's Office...

On 5/13/10 at approximately 3:15 p.m., several calls were received in Powhatan Sheriff's Office. The first caller reported that there was a stabbing in the 4700 block of Bell Road.

The second call was received from the Powhatan Post Office located on Anderson Highway reporting a fight in progress. Officers responded simultaneously to both of these addresses. Upon arrival at the Post Office, two victims of stab wounds were located.

Rashad Brown of Powhatan County was pronounced dead of a stab wound received at the Bell Road address and the second victim was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening wounds. When deputies arrived at the Bell Road address, it was determined that this was the location of the altercation.

Dennis Edward Merchant, Jr.,19, was arrested and charged with the murder of Rashad Brown,19, and Malicious Wounding of the second victim. At the time of this release, investigation is on-going to determine motive for this altercation. No mug shot is available at this time.
