I understand the law about open carry in a CAR. you can carry the gun on your hip and the ammo on the other side as you drive.

I ride a motorcycle and was wondering can this be the same way?

Also, am I breaking the law if I ride by a school in this fashion?

    thanks

There has been a post on this already in the last 2 weeks.

Use the SEARCH function. You will find info about OC on a bike, motorcycle, how to interact with LEOs when pulled over for OC on a motorcycle...

    Again, use the SEARCH function.
Gun control isn't about guns -- it is about control.

    Wow!! really?

so if I drive by in a CAR on the same block as a school while I am open carrying, I am breaking the law?

Go to the above website and check out the stockpile of info there. Be advised, the memos posted there were written over a period of years and most of them have bad info due to misunderstandings of the author (cop, DA, or whoever). When in doubt, refer to the pamphlet or flier, and then - of course - do your own research.

As for motorcycles... when it comes to gun laws** the penal code doesn't treat you any different if you're walking down the street, riding a bicycle, driving a car, or riding a motorcycle. So if it's a legal method of carry while on foot, it applies to all other modes of transportation.

(**As far as the law-abiding person is concerned. Some gun laws do have enhancements if you're in a car (such as drive-by shootings).)

And gun/ammo don't have to be on opposing hips. That's just how most - but not all - people carry.

For example, I have taken to carrying with my holster on my left hip, cross-draw cant. I did this for a road trip once and found that I like it much more than traditional "strong side carry." So, my firearm and mags are all on my left side.
