Armed with trash bags and guns
A group armed with trash bags and guns flanked Portland's Back Cove Saturday.
Their aim? To give back to the community while exercising Maine's open carry law and Second Amendment rights.
The organizer, Shane Belanger, a 19-year-old USM freshman, set up a rally in the Back Cove in April where a number of people showed up, armed. They were met by protesters who called the display needless.
Belanger says he's not shooting for anything other than raising awareness about Maine's open carry law. Similar events have become popular around the country since a man made headlines when he showed up armed to a demonstration against President Obama and his health care reform plan in New Hampshire last summer.
"We don't want to be in anyone's faces," said Belanger. "We just want to do our own thing and not bother anyone."
