Escorted out of Kingstowne walmart today

I was escorted out of walmart today because of some "company Policy".

I've open carried at this particular walmart on more than 10 different occasions without any incidents except for today. When i was trying to purchase some ammo i was asked "is this for that gun you have" and i replied "yes" . After this the clerk said that he couldnt give me the ammo if i have the weapon with me that i am buying it for. He then walked away quickly after snatching back the ammo to consult a manager at which point he was told that he had to escort me out and then he could give me the ammo at the door.

Does this make any sense to anyone? I really felt kinda awkward being walked out like a child then given the ammo. What does this actually do? i mean its not like my weapon was unloaded anyway and if its for safety what would prevent me from walking straight back in?

If anyone is wondering this was at the Kingstowne Walmart.I wasnt treated badly or yelled at or talked down to but this policy seems odd and kind of dumb to me. Anyone else had an experience like this?

I've heard about them (and other "big box" stores like Dicks and Gander Mtn) doing that with gun purchases but not ammo.

To be honest, if I already paid for my purchase, I'd tell them to keep their hands off my property, and walk out myself.

I've OCd in that WalMart for over three years. And, bought ammo.

Never been escorted out and handed theammo outside.

Go gently, please, if you take this up with management.

I have heard of this before.

It makes no sense.

Tell them it is for your other gun. (like it makes any bit of difference).

Honestly im not even sure how to approach this or if I even should. Its kind of odd to me and very dumb. I'm hoping to get some suggestions on here. I'm a bit angry about it.

I can see how it'd make sense from a perspective that was concerned about legal liability. Kind of strained thinking, but it'd make some sense.

Lawyers. Think lawyers. Then it will make sense that it makes sense to them.

As far as your feeling that you were being walked out "like a child," well you are not a child, so that is not a good perception to have. It's just corporate/legal/management(mismanagement) rigamarole.

What would you have done if they insisted, as was the case with 25SM?

continue acting like a tough guy and demand my money back, while making a scene that gives gun owners a bad name.

OK, now that I've gotten that internet gun forum BS out of the way...

Oh, I wouldn't be angry. Bored, maybe. Maybe, double-bored. Because of the idea that someone might load his gun and start shooting with his newly purchased ammo. (sigh)

In the big picture, though, they still allow OC in many stores ifpermitted by state law(manager's discretion as I understand it.) If they want to be super-cautious and not sell the same ammo as fits the OCd gun out of some misguided fear, I'll take that over a complete OC ban.

I can see how you'd want to take a stand, Nova, and demand cancellation of the transaction.

But why would you want to make a scene that shows gun carriers in a bad light? That makes no sense whatsoever.

It's never happened to me, but I don't think I'd like being treated like 25SM was. I think I would have, like you, cancelled the transaction. Unless it was ammo that was at a reallllly at a good price.

Well since you don't open carry it probably never will happen to you.

Yah, I saw that. But it doesn't make any sense.

What would you do, really?

I've never had a problem, even on the rare occasions they've got 38 on the shelf at my local store. Of course, now the counter staff knows me, so they know what I'm usually shopping for, and help me if they can. Lately, of course, all they've had in was 9mm, and since I'm not carrying that gun, the situation differs from yours.

I'd probably end up saying something smart-alecky, such as explaining how my gun is already loaded to capacity, so additional ammo isn't going to change anything while I'm on Walmart property. Or biting my tongue, really hard.

If I already had my purchase in-hand, I would leave as normal.

If they had not handed me my purchase and told me they'd have to "walk me out", I'd politely ask to see a manager so s/he could confirm this "company policy" since I think they might be confusing it with their policy regarding gun purchases.

Plus, I'd probably just say "no" to the question they asked him in the first place, and avoid the situation altogether. Like answering "machinegun" when they ask you if the .22LR you're buying is for a handgun or a rifle.

The "make a scene that makes gun owners look bad" was a poor attempt at humor. On a different well known "black rifle" forum there's a joke about a guy who was "accosted" by a greeter wanting to check his recipt, with the guy responding by "YOU WILL NOT TOUCH ME!!!!" followed by a bunch of funny/dumb/fake stuff.

That gives me an idea.

Lean in close and conspiratorially whisper, "My gun is already fully loaded. It doesn't have room for the stuff you're about tosell me." (say it with a smile)

So let me get this straight. He won't sell you ammo for your legally OC'd firearm because it's for your OC'd firearm?

Whatexactly is he afraid you are going to do, empty all your expensive, hard-to-find defense ammo from your magazines, and then reload a bunch of crappy, FMJ Walmart ammo and THEN shoot up the place?

Did he fail to realize that you ALREADY had ammo loaded into your gun? And probably a spare loaded mag to boot?

What an idiot.

BTW, this is NOT any sort of official Walmart policy. It is BS.

I have purchased PLENTY of ammo in Walmarts in VA and NC while OCing, and never had an issue.

I have OC and purchased at that very Wal Mart. I love how "company policy" comes up. Maybe ask for a copy and see what comes up?

I may have to make an OC run there later to return some items. Wonder if they have 9mm in stock?

I've not had issues at this Walmart before.

AFAIK, there are only 2 or 3 people that regularly work the ammo counter there, at least in the hours when I am in the store. Did they get a new employee or is this new behavior by one of the others?

I was there as well yesterday. I go there ALL THE TIME without any problems. I bought pillow cases from there yesterday at 8:04pm according to my receipt. The person selling you the ammo must have been new or from a different department. They are typically very easy to purchase from and have never once questioned whether or not the ammo I was purchasing was for the same gun that I was wearing.

I might simply let it fly....it might be, according to my experiences, as freak occurrence. In the future you know to tell them that NO. Its not for the gun that is currently at your side.
