Kroger Stores: "No Guns" Policy Rolled Out in Ohio

It appears that Kroger has just rolled out a new policy against Ohioans forbidding them from carrying their firearms where it would otherwise be legal. Ohioans for Concealed Carry carries the reports and thread here:

Kroger stores (aka Fry's, King Soopers, City Market & Dillons) are all over the U.S. Even though this is an Ohio issue for now, let's make sure Kroger (www.kroger.com) hears from all of us who have their stores in our areas, so we can nip this bad stuff in the bud.

Kroger is starting to backpedal--but they still do NOT have a proper understanding of the Ohio Revised Code statutes regarding firearms carry and different types of Class D liquor licenses.

Email to Fred Meyer/Kroger:

"I recently became aware that Fred Meyer/Kroger has instituted a new policy banning legally carried firearms from your stores. I moved to Idaho 3 years ago from Indiana and I was pleased to find the Kroger brand available through Fred Meyer. I have been a loyal customer for over ten years, and a quick check of my Quicken account shows I have spent just under $23,000 at your store. I am a firm believer in a citizen's right to self defense and I am duly authorized by law to carry a firearm in my state. Many other businesses including Starbuck's Coffee and Walmart have a policy that mirrors state law; if it is legal in the state you live in, it is legal in their store. Could you clarify your policy for me? Is it your policy to ban law abiding citizen's from your stores? Thank you for your timely response."

There's an extensive discussion about this on DefensiveCarry.com. Many people have been emailing and calling Kroger and now seem to be gettingthe run-around.

I finally got a response today, but even though I sent this through the Kroger website, the response only mentioned Fred Meyer. They are basically the same company from what I understand. Did anyone else receive a similar response about Kroger specifically?

Fred Meyer has stores in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. All four states allow for open carry with some restrictions to jails, courthouses, airports, schools, etc, but have no restrictions to other public places.

Our current policy is that we follow state law and allow open carry of a firearm.

I finally received a response today of my own. I'll post it up some time this evening after work. Everything sounded okey dokey for carry in VA, but the e-mail indicated that may not be the case everywhere (despite state law).

If you Google "Kroger Robberies" you'll get page after page after page of stories where, apparently, a "no guns" policy did not work.

Of course, maybe Ohio is different.

Even though Fred Meyer is a Kroger controlled chain, they are much different. Fred Meyer sells firearms and ammunition in all of the Alaska stores and several in Oregon. Can't say I've ever seen handguns for sale in any of the other Kroger chains.

I OC'ed my 1911 in the Kroger on Pleasant Ave. in Fairfield Sunday night at 10:30PM. The doors weren't posted. The manager rung me up, and while she questioned the legality of OC and my "need" to carry a gun, she listened to my point of view and was nonconfrontational. It was a pleasant exchange and no police were called for a MWAG.

A couple of weeks ago I talked to the store manager about the incident. He informed me that because a bank and a pharmacy are in the store people can't carry. I informed him that is not the law. He stood there like a deer in the headlights.

I asked him what would he do if I open carried in the store. Again, he stood there like a deer in the headlights, no answer.

This store manager is pathetic.
