If you are not a member of a firearms rights organization (and it seems like everyone looks for reasons not to be), I urge you to find one, join, and get active. I don't know whether this will just be ignored in Washington, or if our good friends in Washington will use this as a pretext or excuse to engage in treachery again.

The NRA, for all of its faults, has the most juice. I recommend joining, and trying to influence the organization as a member if you don't like its other stances.

But anything is better than nothing.

Ha, fkng brilliant

It still amaze me that intelligent human beings somehow think that by making an object illegal it will quash any related illegal activity.

Drugs are illegal, and the groups making money from it are killing each other for market share.

We tried making alcohol illegal... that led to more blood.

I don't know of any drug cartels who give a rats behind about laws.

I have a better idea... ask the US to provide assult rifles to your citizens so that they could take up arms against their oppressors... since you seem to be failing miserably.

I don't know if you've ever crossed the US border going south but when you enter Mexico they have hysterical signs everywhere about how ALL GUNS EVEN .22s ARE ILLEGAL IN MEXICO and you will receive warnings in local literature about the border about how a single stray .22 round found in your car can land you in jail.

Mexico is a great example of many things. Incompetent, corrupt government. Prohibition politics. Impotence. And brass balls.

I have had great experiences with Mexican people on both sides of the border and like them, overall, quite a bit, but their government can get stuffed.

I don't know much about statesmanship but as a layperson, I am not sure the accommodating "partnership" tone our Presidents take with this train wreck of a country has yielded the kind of results we'd desire.

The day we seal off our border completely with troops and cut all funding to that rat hole of a country will be a good sign, its time we cut ties with that corrupt government and focus on our own country for a change. Screw Mexico and its problems, I am tired of our country's leaders spending billions on foreign country's "problems" for votes while our country is in such dire mess. F$@$% THEM I feel so sorry for the people there but they allowed it to get that way, they gave up their rights for government freebies and we can not be the worlds police. They made their bed so they can lay in it.

I call for Mexico to instate an illegal alien entering the US ban and an illegal drug smuggling ban.

Anything else, and Calderon can go piss in his hat.

This Idiot already has his sleepers throughout our country, and our Govt. knows it ! Ourcountry is filthy full of influences like the drug cartels, and taliban more so than the average Joe and jane know. And Washington and big politics will continue to gain from keeping it as a game of chess instead of irradicating it. Someday America will be strong again, because after our next civil war takes place tomaintain our own culture, the Sheep will be dead, and the gun owners will be left standing. America will then Hoist a new flag !

Screw a border fence. Land mines.
Use the illegals picked up in Texas and Arizona to build the fence, dig the moat, stock the alligators and place the land mines. Then send a bill to Calderon for our expenses in feeding and clothing them and transporting them back home. If he doesn't pay the bill they just keep building, digging and planting till he or a family member of the illegal comes up with the money to get their loved one back to their side of the border.

Any illegal picked up anywhere in the country for that matter. New York illegals and Chicago illegals can dig as well as Phoenix illegals.

Hey Conan the Pretend Republican in California, are you paying attention? If I remember right they are an extreme drain on your economy too. If they can't get in through Texas or Arizona they will come through California. Are you going to keep feeding them, schooling them, housing them at your expense or get with the program.

I bet a lot of retired folks would gladly strap on their revolver, pistol, sawed off shotgun etc. and do a stint as fence guard for minimum wage, traveling expenses and an ammo allowance. Think a ex smuggler, gang banger would want to mess with a white haired old coot with a Viet Nam Veterans cap on and a cheek full of chewing tobacco. That old boy might have been working maintenance at Advance Transformer but before he got vested in his retirement package the plant went to Mexico. Now all he has a minimum wage job, his old 45 SAA and all the ammo he can shoot. Go ahead, give him a hard time Jose.

Banning semi-auto rifles in the U.S. is a surefire cure for Soviet-bloc machineguns being smuggled in from Central and South America.

Right?

It surprises me that Calderon was allowed to make his announcement about the AWB. Totally uncalled for. He's delusional.

OP's suggestion that NRA is the best advocacy entity that has the power and chops toeffectively respond at the internationallevel is a good one.

Support the NRA. None of the other gun rights/gun owner advocacy groups have the size, power or savvy to counteract goofballs like Calderon.

Do you understand the first thing about economics?
Let me see, California is the 8th largest economic body in the world and your socialist feel good tree hugging, gun fearing, Timothy Leary disciples now government administrators have you circling the drain. Immigrants are a strong point of your economy, the illegals are a severe drain, what part of this am I missing?

There were 2.8 million illegal immigrants living in California in 2006, the last year for which there are relatively good figures, according to the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California. That represented about 8% of the state's population and roughly a quarter of the nation's illegal immigrants.

About 90% of California's illegal immigrants were from Latin America; 65% from Mexico. There are roughly 19,000 illegal immigrants in state prisons, representing 11% of all inmates. That's costing $970 million during the current fiscal year.

The feds kick in a measly $111 million, leaving the state with an $859 million tab. Advertisement Schools are the toughest to calculate. Administrators don't ask kids about citizenship status. Anyway, many children of illegal immigrants were born in this country and automatically became U.S. citizens. If you figure that the children of illegal immigrants attending K-12 schools approximates the proportion of illegal immigrants in the population, the bill currently comes to roughly $4 billion. Most is state money; some local property taxes.

Illegal immigrants aren't entitled to welfare, called CalWORKs. But their citizen children are. Roughly 190,000 kids are receiving welfare checks that pass through their parents. The cost: about $500 million, according to the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst's Office.

Schwarzenegger has proposed removing these children from the welfare rolls after five years. It's part of a broader proposal to also boot off, after five years, the children of U.S. citizens who aren't meeting federal work requirements.

There'd be a combined savings of $522 million. The state is spending $775 million on Medi-Cal healthcare for illegal immigrants, according to the legislative analyst. Of that, $642 million goes into direct benefits.

Practically all the rest is paid to counties to administer the program. The feds generally match the state dollar-for-dollar on mandatory programs. So-called emergency services are the biggest state cost: $536 million. Prenatal care is $59 million. Not counted in the overall total is the cost of baby delivery -- $108 million -- because the newborns aren't illegal immigrants.

The state also pays $47 million for programs that Washington does not require: Non-emergency care (breast and cervical cancer treatment), $25 million; long-term nursing home care, $19 million; abortions, $3 million.

Or did you mean this:
California's economy is the largest of any state in the US, and is the eighth largest economy in the world.

As of 2008, the gross state product (GSP) is about $1.85 trillion, which is 13% of the United States gross domestic product (GDP).

The state's GDP growth rate slowed to 0.4% in 2008 after having grown 3.1% in 2006 and 1.8% in 2007.

UPDATE 4-California debt rating cut as cash crunch looms

EST Bonds |
Global Markets * $19 bln shortfall tougher to close than last year's-S&P

* Cash crunches seen in March, July, but RANs to be paid (Recasts, adds debt insurance costs and comparison) By Jim Christie and Peter Henderson

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan 13 (Reuters) -

California's main debt rating was cut on Wednesday by Standard & Poor's, which said the government of the most populous U.S. state could nearly run out of cash in March -- and another rating cut might follow.

The state government's budget gap of nearly $20 billion over the next year and a half leaves it in a precarious situation, requiring tax increases or spending cuts, either of which may slow economic recovery, the agency said in a statement. http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN1322681620100114

California economy ranking among largest world economies
November 08, 2009

Where does California rank among the largest economies in the world?

California economy in world terms According to U.S. Department of Commerce estimates, California’s GDP (gross domestic product) was nearly $1.85 trillion. And that puts California as the world’s eighth largest economy in 2008.

Since the 1970s, California has ranked 7th biggest world economy, although for a couple of years in 1984 and 1985, California was the 5th largest economy in the world.

California economy ranks behind Italy The California economy currently ranks eighth just behind Italy and ahead of Russia and Spain. California has been ranking 1 or 2 spots below Italy, since the 1970s, however in the year 2000 California jumped over Italy to the 6th spot, when Italy had one year of negative economic growth that set Italy back a couple of years before it regained its economic footing.

However, in 2002 California was overtaken by China's economy and fell back to the 7th largest spot, And in 2003, when Italy's economy regained its normal pace of growth, Italy surpassed California and pushed it back another spot to eighth biggest economy, the rank it has occupied every year since 2003.

California economy and world economies Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in $ trillion
1. United States (14.16)

since California is in this list, this figure should be (12.31)

4. Germany (3.65)

5. France (2.86)

6. United Kingdom (2.68)
