Most of us who OC have occasionally gotten the "Are you a cop?" question. Recently, however, I've noticed a disturbing trend. Instead of that question, people have been saying "Don't shoot me, officer!" I've gotten it several times in the past few weeks, and it disturbs me.

Thus far, I've responded as if I get that they're joking and say something like, "I'll try not to."

Do people really think that all cops are trigger happy? Also, do people think that I look like I might shoot them? Has anyone else noticed this question?

+1

Recently I got "What department do you work for?"

My response "I work in office supplies" and my fellow OCer "I am a sattelite engineer"....

The citizen came back with "No, really who do you work for?"

I don't think he believed us....oh well....

Or people who read the news...

During Katrina, there were SEVERAL incidents of LEO's shooting random people for no diescernable reason, and one VERY high-visibility case where they were actually brought up on charges in Federal court, and plead guilty to shooting three people on the Danziger St. Bridge and then attempting to cover it up...

Allow me to pass along my experiences of OCing for 15 years. When I first started OCing, I got the same comments as you. Some would say: "I didn't do it!". It all seemed in jest, and some might get enjoyment from being acknowledged that you do exist! No one cared before and now many notice you. I will admit that I enjoyed joking with people who made such comments. I always told them I'm not in LE and I have a permit to carry.

I reached a point that I wanted to go low profile so all of that would stop. I gave it a lot of thought. (My apologies to those who have read it before). I was carrying a large black 1911 in a tan holster on a black belt, with two extra magazines, also at belt level.

I decided the only way to stop the attention, without CCing, was to carry a firearm that looks something like what LE carry. I'm not referring to finding out what they are carrying and then buying that gun.

The majority of people know one thing: cops carry black looking guns, black holster and black belt. So, I tested the water by carrying a Glock in a Serpa (black) holster and a black belt.

I also changed my attitude. I quit looking around to see if I'm being looked at or store security was coming. If someone looked at me, I would smile and say hello. That is very disarming (pun intended!) to
any. I also acted like the gun belonged on me and I tried to think it is the same as carrying a cell phone.

The results were amazing. I give most of the improvement to the change to all black. Many don't notice I'm carrying. The one's that do, give me a respectable nod of the head.

I only get questions from gun people asking what I'm carrying and from the general public, the question is: "Do you work for the county or city?". I tell them neither, I'm excercising my 2nd admendent right plus I have a permit to carry a gun.

Give it a try. You might be surprised. Oh, the part about acting as the gun belongs on you - it didn't take long before I felt that way. That really helps in drawing less attention. Hope this helps.

Yeah... that's unfortunate, to say the least. Still disrespectful for someone to blatantly say that to someone else (cop of not).
