I have oced in both towns countless timesand have yet to have a problem of any kind. The LaCrosse PD is aware of the laws regarding oc and seems to have done a good job educating their officers. As for Onalaska I know several people carry there regularlyand have heard of no troubles.Hope this is helpful. Carry on.

Valley View Mall -- NO GO
Burger King -- NO GO
Buffalo Wild Wings -- NO GO

After that, every other place I've been hasn't had a problem.

Gander, Walmart, ShopKo, Farm & Fleet, Woodmans, Festival, McDonalds, Perkins, Dairy Queen, Subway, etc all good.

PM me with when/where you will be in town, maybe we can meet up somewhere.

I have personal emails from Captain Lawrence of the La Crosse Police and Chief Trotnic of Onalaska stating they are aware of open carry in the area. As long as you aren't doing anything suspicious the officers may just ask you for ID. It's a pretty easy area to carry, I've never had a problem.

And remember, even IF they ask, you don't have to provide ID unless you are driving.

Carry On.

And "ID" is satisfied orally.

If you are driving then you must establish your privilege by showing your license.

Doug, assuming one enters into a consensual conversation with an officer and proffers ID by tendering one's first and last name, are you saying this is rendering ID?

If so, Cool. My understanding is that it would not even be necessary but if you are in a consensual conversation, it would be polite.

As I believe. Residence may be essential.

968.24 Temporary questioning without arrest. After
having identified himself or herself as a law enforcement officer,
a law enforcement officer may stop a person in a public place for
a reasonable period of time when the officer reasonably suspects
that such person is committing, is about to commit or has committed
a crime, and may demand the name and address of the person
and an explanation of the person’s conduct. Such detention
and temporary questioning shall be conducted in the vicinity
where the person was stopped.
History: 1993 a. 486.

An identification document is your "papers" in which you are secure from seizure without cause.

The way I read this statute is that it is extremely vague. Name and address could simply be your first name and you the state of which you live in. The statute says nothing about your FULL name or your POSTAL address. For instance, I could reply to a request of ID when I know I am doing nothing wrong with "My name is Adam, I live in Wisconsin." In my understanding, that satisfies the aforementioned statute.

But like others have said in earlier posts in this thread, unless you are driving, no ID is required. I have yet to see or hear about a law that requires all US citizens to carry ID.

Still needs probable cause. Without it they can't demand anything. Racine Police Dept. can verify that one.

No, they do not need Probable Cause for 'detainment' but a few elements of Reasonable Artictable Suspicion

Yes they have to have reasonable suspicion that you have, will, or arebreaking the law in order to detain you you and demand ID. Sorry probable cause was the wrong word but still think it is understood that they can't just demand it just because they want it.

Lots of shooting opportunities if you're here over the weekends:

There is a USPSA match at the Holmen Rod & Gun Club on June 27.

There is an Appleseed shoot at the La Crosse Rifle Club June 26 & 27.

If you're into high-power, there is a 600 yard match on Father's Day weekend (June 19 & 20), also at the La Crosse Rifle Club.
