I was kicked out of a Sears in my home town. I am not going to say asked to leave, or polity escorted out, because of how the manager treated me, and was threatening me with arrest. OC is legal in the state of NV, and i was not being disruptive, a buddy and i were simply looking at tools.

Sears response to a phone call asking for clarification on their firearms policy:
Dear sir,

Thank you for your recent correspondence. We are always interested in
hearing from our customers, and regret it was this type of situation
that prompted you to contact us. We apologize for the inconvenience you
have experienced and understand your frustration with firearms not being
allowed in Sears stores.

With regard to your suggestion that Sears change its policy regarding
weapons in the workplace, Sears has no intention of doing so at this
time as we remain focused on providing a safe shopping and work
environment for our customers and associates

Once again, we apologize for your experience with firearms not being
allowed in Sears stores. We appreciate your business, and value you as a
customer. We certainly hope you will continue to make Sears Holdings
Corporation your choice for quality and value.

Sincerely,
Brooke G.

Kmart's response to a separate email asking about the Corporate policy regarding the legal carry of firearms into their stores:
Dear sir,

Thank you for your recent correspondence. We are always interested in
hearing from our customers, and regret it was this type of situation
that prompted you to contact us. We apologize for any frustration you
have encountered with our Gun Policy.

You may forward your comments to:

Sears Holdings Corporation
3333 Beverly Road
Mail Stop RR-1
Hoffman Estates, IL 60179

Once more, thank you for taking the time to contact us. We appreciate
your business and value you as a Sears Holdings customer. We certainly
hope you will continue to make Sears Holdings your choice for quality
and value.

Sincerely,
Ray J
Retail Customer Care
Sears Holdings Corporation

Please feel free to send letter, emails, or phone calls in to both companies letting them know if they will be losing your business. Personally i will not be spending any money with either store unless the policy is changed, and i will be informing all of my friends who support the 2nd amendment of their policy.

Hopefully we can get Sears Holdings Corporation to reconsider and take an approach similar to their competitors such as Lowe's, Home Depot, Walmart and other companies such as Starbucks that go along with state law, instead of infringing on 2nd amendment rights and not allowing customers to protect themselves.

Somebody on a local forum discussing the incident posted this:

"Here is my suggestion: let's put up a united front. When gun owners are treated poorly for acting within their rights, we support them in that activity instead of getting all high and mighty. Or, let's continue to splinter ourselves. FUDDs over there, concealed only snobs on this side, cops over here, NFA owners (you unpopular assholes...why do you need a silencer or a machine gun?). Hand together or hang alone, y'know? "

So please, feel free to repost this on any local, small forums, or other large forums i have not heard about, it gotten around to posting on yet. Lets band together, and get some changes made!

Once again, i would like to emphasize the united front. While the manager at your particular store may not care, it is still a corporate policy that Firearms are not permitted. This affects people in other places in the country, and other locations.

When everyone comes together and requests that the policy be changed, otherwise Sears will lose business from America's gun owners, and backs this up by not spending money at Sears or Kmart, they will notice a hit in their sales. I am confident this will cause the higher ups to revise the policy. After all, Sears used to sell guns a while back ago.

I haven't been to Sears in over 20 years - they pissed me off a long time ago with their policies. And I can't remember the last time I entered a K-MART, though it was probably 6-7 years ago.

But I agree with the united front, and will contact Sears.

You know it's almost amusing... California Pizza Kitchen vs. ... well almost everyone else. Peet's Coffee vs. Starbucks...

Sears vs. (fill in the blank).

It's sort of like a race for the bottom.

Thank you to those who are coming together and letting Sears know that as Americans, we are standing up for our rights, and will not support businesses that attempt to infringe upon that.

I'm all for this boycott, in fact I went to www.friendorfoe.us and updated all Vegas Sears/K-mart's with a negative rating and a comment on their newly discovered policy. I just wish I could have simultaneously hit every Sears/K-Mart in the country instead of having to do it individually.

In any case, I'm hoping I can find somewhere else that sells Jones Cane-Sugar Soda. Everything else I used to purchase from there I know I can find elsewhere.

Silly hoplophobes.

I stopped buying tools from Sears a long time ago...(is there any other reason to go there) I noticed that over time their tools would break more and more with less and less force. I don't care if it is a unconditional guarantee I want tools that don't break easily...running back and forth to get them replaced is a pain.
Now that I know their policy I have no intentions of ever going back.

Im afraid that not going back alone is simply not enough. Please take the time to send them a short email explaining that due to the firearms policy, they have lost your business.

Thanks for the help and support!

I understand that a person openly carrying a pistol in one of your stores (in Nevada, where open carry is legal) when he was kicked out. He contacted your corporate offices and was told that Sears (and K-Mart) had a policy against legally-carried firearms.

I am a regular Sears shopper. I regularly purchase tools there. My wife buys a lot of clothes there. We have purchased appliances. Our house was sided by Sears. I will no longer shop at Sears.

I recently started shopping at K-Mart after about a decade-long hiatus due to poor customer service. It was so bad that you had to shut your stores in Montgomery. Anyway, I will no longer shop at K-Mart, either.

Your corporation has a perfect right to deny legal carry. Your customers have a right not to shop in your stores. And, you will shortly find that you have lost a lot of customers. Your policy is being posted on forums frequented by thousands of gun-owners. Many will stop shopping in your stores, even if they don't take the time, like I have done, to tell you.

I strongly suggest you rethink your policy. You might want to check with retailers like Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and Starbucks about their policies. They are not gun-friendly. They are gun-neutral--as they should be.

You will need to publicize your decision or the gun-owning community will not know of any change in your policy. I won't be shopping in your stores again until you have a published policy of neutrality on the issue.

The point of my post was one of surprise. I had no idea that Sears had an anti-gun policy. In fact, the one I have gone to over the past eleven years is located in an enclosed shopping mall which had "No Gun" signs posted on the mall entrances. But the Macy's and the Sears have no such signs, so I have OC'd in both of those stores without problem. Maybe this particular Sears never got the corporate word, eh?

And this is one mall I never go to unarmed since it has had problems with teenagers and gangs (gee - No guns = gang problems perhaps??).

Thanks for the info.

I'm amazed that nobody has noticed that Sears' response addressed "Firearms In The Workplace" as opposed to prohibitting customers from carrying while shopping.

Thanks to OSHA and its state couinterparts, most businesses must have a "workplace violence" policy, and generally a huge component of that is the banning of firearms in the workplace -- something that applies to empolyees and contractors, but not to customers.

I have found it useful to attempt to discuss the differnces between what employees are not allowed to do and what customers may be permitted to do, rather thanstart witha campaign to shut down or boycott an entire corporate structure. Yes, there does come a time when the whole company needs to be put on notice, but it is not generally the first move made.

Meeting with the store manager (a prearranged meeting) to discuss - not rant and rave - your dissatisfaction at how you were treated as a customer and why the perception of The Gun Is Bad is not accurate may get you to the point of looking at corporate policy and having them see that the prohibition applies only to employees, and that you and other OC-ers are the good guys who do not shoplift, vandalize and otherwise disrupt their business.

If, as in this case the local store manager is not likely to be friendly, going one step up to the district/region manager might be more appropriate. But remember, cooperation gets you a lot farther than confrontation.

stay safe.

According to what the "Director of customer service" told me on the phone (after calling them regarding the email) I was told that Sears (and Kmart being part of Sears Holdings Corp.) have a very strict NO smoking, NO Alcohol and NO Firearms policy. That is, they "DO NOT allow any of the three on their property whether it be Employees or Customers." Obviously this was a statement and not a written policy but it did come from someone at Sears claiming to be the end all person in the customer service management chain.

Well as of yesterday they said they (Kmart) are under the Sears Holdings Corporation umbrella and their policy is "No smoking, No alcohol and No firearms allowed on their property" they could have been blowing smoke on the phone, but they followed it with the above emails.

I plan to do more research on this today.
