We have scheduled our second trip to Kentucky to continue our search. We visited last November. The weather was perfect! The people were great. We fell in love with the area. We are concentrating on the area in and around Franklin, however we will also look at areas down in northern Tennessee this time.

We decided that we should experience the hot, sticky summer weather too, so we will be arriving on August 4th, returning to this cesspool of socialism called CommieFornia on the 13th.

I'm looking forward to the visit!

BTW, what do folks use for mosquito repellent there? I heard that Avon "Skin So Soft" works the best. "OFF?" "DEET? Suggestions?

Skin So Soft is the best repellent I have ever used. That is in Kentucky and while in the Marines. You will find the laws for carry in Kentucky are more user friendly than those to the south of us in Tennessee (ie. not being able to open carry in Tenn. without permit). Also, the Commonwealths is a concealed deadly weapons license which authorizes the carrier to carry any deadly weapon, switchblade, throwing stars, etc.

Good luck on the house hunting.

KY has better gun laws than TN, but is horrible as far as taxes. Property taxes, income tax, sales tax, car property tax each year etc...

TN only has a sales tax and a one time sales tax on your vehicle at the time of purchase. The best of both worlds is living on the border with KY but in TN. You can drive to KY to shop for groceries, no taxes on those and the sales tax is 6% compared to TN 8%+ in some counties.

I don't mean to belittle your observations about taxes in Kentucky, but did I mention I'm living in CommieFornia?

Property taxes - Mom's house valued at $439K, annual property tax: $6,700.00. My house is valued at $165K. Annual propert tax: $3,200.00. We pay about $10,000.00 per year property tax for these two homes. And people wonder why the "kids" move in with mom and dad in CommieFornia!

Registration for my new 2004 Dodge Sprinter (sale price: $26K) was nearly $1,000.00 the first year. It goes down each year until it bottoms out at about $250.00. Mt truck is 5 years old. I have paid Commiefornia about $4,000.00 in "USE FEES" (You mean you're actually going to drive that truck on our roads?) That isn't sales tax. That is a tax for using the roads!

We're paying about 48 cents per gallon Federal and state taxes for each gallon of fuel.

Sales tax here is 9.25%

If you buy a computer, a monitor, a printer, a DVD player etc., you have to pay the disposal fee at the time of purchase, because you just might dispose of it illegally in CommieFornia! They can't trust you to dispose of it legally, so you pay the illegal dump fee up front. EVEN IF I take all of my "hazardous waste" with me to Kentucky, I still have to pay Commiefornia the penalties for disposing of it illegally here. I bought a 24" flat panel monitor. I had to pay Commiefornia $26.00 for the privilege. I told them I promise not to dispose of the monitor in their state, but that doesn't matter.

Tires for you car? you pay a waste disposal fee per tire when you BUY them, and you pay another $3-5.00 per tire when you actually dispose of them. Large tires (4WD mudders, etc.) can cost $10 to $25 per tire to dispose of them.

I just bought two batteries for my tow truck. I paid $40.00 to the state ($20.00 per battery, hazardous waste disposal fee) to leave my two old batteries at Sears' door for recycling.

They replaced my electric meter recently. It is a "smart" meter. It "talks" to the other meters over the power lines, and tattles on me if I am burning more energy that the average consumption for my area on a given day. So if I decide to spend the day doing laundry while my neighbors all head t the stadium for the big game, my electricity could double or triple in price, because I'm using much more than they are at that moment. They aren't even home, but that doesn't matter.

You probably pay a flat rate per KwH for electricity. We have tiered rates here. If I use 160 Kw in a month, it is .21 per Kw. If I go over my 160 Kw allotment, the additional electricity is charged at a premium rate of about .34 per Kw because I am "wasting" electricity. If I go over the next tier (I think 230Kw) I pay even more per Kw for the additional power. My mom's electric bill is about $40.00 per month. Mine routinely runs $130.00 I have computers, cable TV, and 13 watt exterior security lights that run all night, as well as security cameras and such. I am deemed to be a "gross consumer" of electricity. I guess I'm not supposed to run the pool pump. After all, my mom doesn't use that much electricity while running her pool pump. She doesn't HAVE a pool, or a pool pump, but if she did, they calculate that she would be using her electricity far more efficiently than I do. She doesn't have a pool or a pool pump, but that doesn't matter!

Trash pick up is $39.00 per month. The "penalty assessment" for this county started out at 5%. A $20.00 ticket would cost $21.00 when you went to pay it. THe additional 5% ($1.00) went to pay for tires for patrol cars and such. There was no ceiling placed on the assessment when it was created. THe county's penalty assessment is currently 331%. Carpool lane violations carry a $100.00 fine. So do red light camera tickets. When the penalty assessment is added to the fine, it will cost you $431.00 to pay that ticket.

I could go on, but I'm tired now. And broke.

The above is proof that the only smart people in California are promptly moving out of California.

You have my condolences, my friend. Even Chicago wasn't that bad, and that's saying something. I feel like I've been living with the Cobra Commander, but I feel a little better because at least I'm not living with Emperor Palpatine.

And yes, it was a situation so extreme that I felt only the nerdiest of analogies would satisfy.

Having lived in KY for 1.5 years, I like to point out one thing to potential transplants (and sorry if I already did).

Please understand police enforcement here is next to nil. People do what they feel like doing, and there's really no recourse for their actions. I'm not talking strictly about firearms, but other things such as vehicle maintenance, etc.

Do you see this as a BAD thing?

I live in San Diego County. We have police enforcement. TONS of it. That is why I want to move!

As I have said before, I'm not sure if I'm going to heaven or hell when I die, but I'm going from Kentucky

Come on over to western ky! I think I remember the search last year too. Come a little north, and just a tad west... Madisonville, Mortons Gap, White Plains (A+ for small), Crofton, Central City (home of Uncle Lee's((best hand gun prices))), and Nortonville. All great towns, White Plains being the smallest. OH>>> Dawson Springs is beautiful little town too!
Do you have preference still? What type of work do you do? Good jobs to be had around here. I just moved from the Lexington area, and I had a job even before I got here.... Something to be said there. Tyson chicken factory is near Madisonville, and the #1 reason they fire people is because people wont come to work. (might also read something into that) Pay is good, and work is easy. Cant beat that!

I'll be starting a business there. Probably going to hire one or two people to help me out. We are looking at several possibilities. I am interested in 3-D Rapid Prototyping. I'd use ProEngineer or SolidWorks software, and send the designs to a 3D printer for production. Alternately, I have other ideas.

I want to place an ad in the local paper there and get some feedback from the people of that area. the ad would basically be:

"What this town needs is a good ____________." I'd invite anyone to fill in the blank! I'll probably offer some small reward for the best suggestions, and go from there. If I get a lot of responses pointing in one direction, then I'll steer my business ideas that way.

I don't know Kentucky. Do you think a good old fashioned ice cream shop would work? What about indoor vehicle storage, or self-storage? A bicycle shop? Security installations (Cameras, networking, etc.?) A welding shop? A 'fix-it' shop? A thrift store? Ariel photography?

I am capable of doing many things, but I'd sure like to have some idea of what folks who have lived there for some time feel they would like to see added to the community.

I know that when I was there in November, everyone asked me the same question; "What will you do?" I guess they are telling me that employment is depressed there. I am hoping to start a business and create a few jobs for some lucky young people. If I manufacture some line of products, I'll need people who can help me make them and ship them out.

Any suggestions from you fine folks? I'd appreciate any feedback, good or bad! I can take it.

Well, it really all depends upon where in Kentucky you're going to be settling. If in Eastern Ky. and if you have the funds to do it, an indoor Shooting Range. I've already scouted a location and have pondered this myself but while I have ideas for it, I don't have the funds.

Everywhere in Kentucky can use a great pawn shop/gun shop. There is one here where I live and it is packed on both sides everyday. Gun sales are good and so is the pawn side. Wish I had the capital to do it myself.

Really? An INDOOR shooting range? Gosh, I would have thought that Kentucky would be full of them already.

Ideas? Like a nice 500 YARD indoor climate controlled range with automatic target retrieval, HD video monitoring of target at the shooting table regardless of the target's distance, and so forth? With stationary and moving targets? Individual shooting lanes walled off so the brass that falls through the porous floor plate will be gathered together for YOU to take home for reloading, rather than losing it to the guy in the next lane, and not be trampled on with your shoes? Like a REAL air filtration system that doesn't leave you in a cloud of gunpowder smoke? Like an acoustically designed shooting area that will allow you to fire a gun indoors without wearing 'ears'? Like a shooting booth that allows you to simulate a standing, kneeling, sitting or prone position as well as shooting from behind a tree or wall with either hand? How about those for starters?

I do have the capital. I just don't quite know what to do with it ... yet!
