Police say gunman who shot 4 in Calif. dies

LOS ANGELES – A man walked into a Southern California fast food restaurant and shot his stepdaughter and her family of four as they ate lunch together, killing the woman's husband and 8-year-old son before fatally shooting himself Saturday afternoon, police said.
The 56-year-old man arrived at the Del Taco restaurant in San Bernardino on a bike at about 1 p.m., walked over to a table and opened fire at his 29-year-old stepdaughter, her 33-year-old husband, their 6-year-old son and their 8-year-old son, San Bernardino police Lt. Jarrod Burguan said.
The woman's husband was declared dead at the restaurant and the 8-year-old was declared dead at a hospital, San Bernardino Fire Department spokesman Steve Tracey said.
The woman and the 6-year-old boy were hospitalized in critical condition, Tracey said. The names of the victims and the shooter weren't released.
Police said several other people were in the restaurant, but the gunman clearly walked in seeking the four victims. They said the gunman had a long and violent criminal record, but did not give further details.
Owners of nearby businesses said horrified patrons streamed out of the restaurant after the shots were fired.
"I saw some people yelling and all of a sudden I heard 'boom, boom, boom, boom'," Jorge Garcia, who works at a recycling trailer in the same parking lot as the restaurant, told the Riverside Press-Enterprise. "I saw two employees run out of the employee door and then I saw eight or 10 people run out of the restaurant and across the street."

Long and violent criminal record? With felonies, this person is prohibited firearms possession, and yet, that did not keep him from carrying one for the purpose of murdering this family. The law banning possession does not work either in this instance or with respect to the GFSZ.

Yet, this is exactly the sort of scenario that Saldana and other anti-liberty legislators would point to to defend such legislative idiocy as AB1934.

Id be interested to see how the circumstances would have turned out if the Del Taco had even one alert and armed individual present. By the bare account that has been described here, the shooter may have been so focused on the targets, that he may have had blinders on, oblivious to the presence of someone suitably prepared to spoil his intentions. Perhaps instead of four dead, maybe the children could have been spared.

We will never know.

We'll never know but from the sounds of it, about all an OCer could have done is prevent the gunman from turning on other patrons as it was fast. The "yelling and screaming before the gunfire" however indicates that there may have been an opportunity.

Like you said, we'll never know.

It will be "interesting" to see how the anti's try to spin this one into yet another reason for more gun control...... on account of it worked so well to keep this guy (long violent criminal record) from getting one and killing innocent people.

I took a drive by this place just now. There are news trucks from every station there setup for their 11 o'clock newscasts, and about 2 dozen SBPD cruisers and detective cars. The restaurant is taped off, and lots of cops going in and out. Bullet holes in the windows near the door. I don't suspect the clean-up crew has come by yet. Pretty messy scene.
