OC Summertime Picnic In Montana?

It sure is quiet here in Montana. Washington (where I moved from) is planning their summer picnic on August 15th, which I will be attending.

Whynot plan one for Montana? It'd be great to meet some of you, and it might be a good way to promote the forum and the cause.

I will volunteer to do the planning and press releases..... I would even volunteer to make my famous potato salad or pulled pork!

Are any of you interested in doing this? Would you attend a picnic in Bozeman sometime in September?

HRM....Bozeman is about a 2 1/2 hour drive for me. That's a fair chunk of change for my quasi-retired/funemployed beheinny. Perhaps a midway meet-up in Butte?

Either way, I'm game to meet up with another transplant from Washington, for an OC event, even if I do have to drive all the way to Bozeman!:celebrate

My schedule is pretty full until the week after the fourth though...Plus I have a cabin to get built before winter (and winter comes EARLY at nearly 7000 feet!)

How Very Sad

I'm in disbelief that this state has almost no Second Amendment and Open Carry activity.

phsssthpok, I would be honored to meet you at some point. It doesn't look like there will be any sort of Second Amendment and Open Carry activity in Montana here at opencarry.org. Send me a PM and we can figure it out for ourselves.

The fight goes on...... with or without the MT forum.

Count me and my pregnant girlfriend in. I'll come to Bozeman or Butte if y'all decide to do one. I'll have to bring the dog too as he doesn't get left at home very often, especially on road trips!
Anyways, if there's more interest in the idea count me in! No drive is too far to promote the cause that we're all trying so hard to fight for!!

Guns are more a part of the culture in Montana and some other western states. NO need for a lot of 'activity'. Another reason you don't see a lot of 'activity', no major metropolitan areas. Persons may not be inclined to drive for 2+ hours to have lunch and 'celebrate' the gun rights that are enjoyed as part of the nature of Montana. Not much for them 'to fight'. The gun culture that permeates much of Montana is not found in states like you and I are from so there is more we need to fight for, including general acceptance of citizens being armed, not really the case in states like Montana.

That being said the MSSA, which you should join, does continue to improve gun rights in MT. I think they do have a get together once a year but don't quote me on that.

Thank You for your excellent post. It explains it perfectly and I now understand that I was wrong to believe that just because it's not as active here in MT as what I'm used to in Seattle, people aren't engaged. The only thing that concerns me is that my home state of Washington used to be that way until the socialist plague spread and took over there. We weren't very active in the cause because we didn't think we needed to be. I just hope that plague doesn't take over here in MT, right under the unsuspecting noses of freedom-loving gun owners here.

I like the MTSSA and am looking forward to being involved with that group's efforts. They've done a lot for Montana, but also for the entire nation with the Firearms Freedom Act. I'll be interested to see who challenges it first.

Thanks again for helping me understand the dynamics here.

Heck... functions?

Many people can't seem to be bothered to open carry where I live (Butte). The wife and I carry concealed all the time during winter, but during summer I am constantly open carry. I have yet, in 6 years here, to see another citizen exercising open carry.

Judging by the stares, glares, and comments by most of those I encounter, I believe most Montanans simply aren't aware of their rights. In 6 years, I can count the number of positive open-carry encouragements on two hands.

This doesn't deter me and I simply ignore those who feel they must glare at me for carrying. Perhaps it is my long hair and beard! haha

I've thought about doing this very thing in the past but wasn't sure of the interest from other people and other parts of Montana. If there's any interest up here in Northwestern Montana, even if it is a regional get-together or visit or barbecue then I'd be more than willing to bring a grill and the family. The wife and I are even willing to travel a ways if a state picnic gets put together.
Let me know if I can do anything to plan for this and help arrange the whole ordeal. I'm more than willing to help plan and maybe come up with some kind of flyers to post around the area for it. I'd even be willing to use my email or phone number as a point of contact for people looking for information regarding it. Someone let me know and let's get this damn thing going! We need to organize some kind of annual social to promote things and expand knowledge about it!!
Let's Go!! Chop! Chop! Hurry! Get the Lead Out!!

I am going to make more of an effort to OC--especially this summer when warmer weather and no bulky outer layers would partially conceal my handgun.

The County Park at Somers Bay is a great place to BBQ on warm summer evenings.

Tuesday night concerts at Depot Park in Kalispell would be a sure place to start a million conversations!

04 March 2011 FRI Helena MT on the Steps of the State Capitol 11 am - 2 pm was the Constitution Rally - Open Carry of Handguns, Rifles, and Shotguns. Legislators and other spoke for nearly 3 hours on the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 9th, and 10th amendment mostly. News media pushed the gun rally and low numbers theme - they were wrong on both counts. We started with 15 and finished with 25 or so people, but the high count was 90 to 100 people. Yes, this was lower than 27 March 2010, but that was on SAT and this was on FRI, plus advertised for 8 months or so versus 2 weeks of advertise this time. The Rally was for the Legislators to speak ! not for a crowd gathering. Last year was sort of windy, this year was very very windy and much colder. Mission Accomplished - 100% ! People from Helena, Billings, Bozeman, Missoula, and Kalispell plus parts in between !

05 March 2011 SAT MSSA Annual Meeting Helena MT ? Where were you ?

Some on this forum talk about doing stuff but never carry through ... or show up ! esp from NW Montana. None of these talkers showed up in Missoula, Helena, Billings, or YNP !

There will be another Open Carry event this summer, details when we pick a place and date.

Where were you when we testified in Helena at the Legislature for 3 days in early FEB 2011 ?

Will you be in Helena at the Legislature 1 day 16 March 2011 - Wed to speak for MSSA bills and against Menahan bill ?

Dear MSSA Friends,

One new item and two reminders:

1) New Item. The Senate Judiciary Committee has scheduled public hearings on four "gun bills" for Wednesday, March 16th beginning at 8 AM:
HB 174 - suppressors
HB 271 - permitless concealed carry - everywhere including inside city limits
HB 384 - prohibited places
HB 496 - police destroy guns (we oppose)

2) The MSSA Annual Meeting will be held this Saturday, March 5th in the State Capitol Room 303, beginning at 10 AM. We will break for lunch and should be done by 4 PM or earlier. Come if you're interested.

3) Montana's Right to Keep and Bear Arms Celebration Week begins next Monday, March 7th. Plan a celebration!

1-1-224. Observance of right to keep and bear arms. The week beginning the first Monday in March is an official week of observance to commemorate Montana's valued heritage of the right of each person to keep and bear arms in the defense of his home, person, or property or in aid of civil power. During this week, all Montanans are urged to reflect on their right to keep and bear arms and to celebrate this right in lawful ways.
