You'd be surprised how often that BS works though. It's a go-to move for many offenders.

I watched this stupid ass guy shoplift once. When I confronted him he was all I'm so sorry I'll pay blah blah blah. He had $40 in his pocket he showed me so he could pay. I was like "That doesn't help your cause you idiot. I'd be much more sympathetic if you were broke and stealing food. You've got money and your stealing cigars to roll blunts. $40 is the price for a quarter. Shut up."

BUT HE MADE HIM CRY! Think of the kids! He was just a baby, 24, just a few years beyond draft age....

Probably the first time someone forced him to grow up and accept responsibility for his actions.
