Don't Go THERE!

Okay, you are a great help. Now I have another question!

In every state, there are areas where a 'tourist' or someone who doesn't know the area and isn't familiar with local customs and traditions shouldn't go. Think of the movie "Family Vacation" when Chevy chase ends up in an inner city ghetto trying to ask for directions to the interstate as the local thugs strip valuable parts off of his car.

I hear things about Louisville and such, with HINTS about areas we are better off avoiding altogether, but so far, no one has pushed a pin into a map for me.

We are flying into Nashville on August 4th. We'll rent a car, and then we're going to 'wing it' around Western Kentucky and Northern Tennessee. Can you folks tell me the areas to AVOID, as we look for an area to settle? My mom and I are White, Catholic, 70ish and 52, conservative, etc. I don't want to wander into some area where I have to decide how to answer the question, "Er you a Hatfield, er er you a McCoy?" A good female friend who was born and raised in Kentucky told me to stay out of the eastern part of the state. She said the people were nice enough, and it wasn't so much a safety issue as the folks in those parts just didn't like 'outsiders' snooping around.

On our last visit, we settled in Bowling Green, and did 100 - 130 mile loops each day, to the west, the north, the east, always returning to our hotel at night. This time we're going to meander a bit and find hotels along the way, flying back to CommieFornia on the 13th.

Open Carry

Kentucky is constitutionally an open carry state, no matter where you are.

We also have concealed carry for those who qualify, which is minimal if you've stayed out of trouble.

What else do you need to know?

What else do you expect to get from a forum dedicated and restricted to OC and RKBA as being the only approved topics?

Okay ... so, Lets say I am a resident of western Kentucky, and one summer, I decide to take a tour of the entire state of Kentucky in a rental car, while either legally open carrying or concealed carrying a firearm. In your opinion, in which areas of the state, as defined by a county, city or neighborhood name that can be found on a map am I most likely to find myself in a situation where I may be forced to draw my personal defense weapon to stave off a life-threatening attack?

Does that qualify?

I've NEVER seen or read ANYWHERE, that this is "restricted" to OC discussion ONLY! Anything that falls under the heading of "Personal Carry" or "Self-Defense" has been good to go..

Granted, I do agree that we don't wish for the threads to get away from the basic ideas that we're trying to promote here.

The reference should be to OC and RKBA, not "only" OC.

E.KY is friendly

I live in Ashland, about as far east and north as you can get without going into either OH or WV. While Ashland is a fairly safe place to live, there are the occassional robbery, murder, home invasion, or such. We have what are called "pillbillies" and other drug issues. But, from my understanding, it is worse in other places. I feel safe here, whatever that means. I do carry though, especially when I go out to dinner in Huntington WV. I've never had to draw my firearm in the tri-state area.

One area that gets a lot of good press is just east of Lexington between Winchester and Morehead. There are really nice farms and lots of woods there yet you are still close enough to Lexington to have all the entertainment and shopping areas for anything you need.

I'm all set to come there for another visit, and to seek out the place where I shall return to America after leaving the cesspool of Socialism called "California"

So my mom and I have had several talks about this. Sort of like ... "You know, we never hear about Kentucky in the news. Things happen in other states, tornadoes, floods, fires, etc., but Kentucky seems to be rather stable ..."

Then the whole darned region FLOODS on down into Tennessee, and recently another flash flood takes out 200 homes! LOL! My mom is saying, "We should think about Texas ..."

We walk into a J.C. Penny and the sales lady, upon hearing of our plans to visit/move to Kentucky starts telling my mom about all of the meth lab busts, and the "HUGE drug problem down there!"

DANG IT! I just can't believe things are that bad there! Especially since we face the taxes, the hoards of illegals here, crime, the taxes, water rationing, traffic jams, traffic light cameras, high property taxes, rampant liberalism, did I mention the taxes?!?

I want to move to a state where people KNOW what freedom and the 2nd Amendment are all about. I don't plan to carry much, but I can't begin to tell you how comforting it is to know I CAN carry if I choose, without being tazed by fruity liberal commiefornia cops who buy into the Left's ideas hook, line and sinker!

Well, we can't change the plans. The airline tickets are purchased, and reservations are made. We're going to drive around Kentucky and Tennessee, and possibly into other states, time allowing.

Folks! PLEASE give me a few good posts talking about all of the GREAT things about living in Kentucky, that I can print out and let my mom read, so she can feel better about this trip! She does not have a computer, and has never been on the Internet, nor does she have an email address. I recently bought a cellular phone for her to use in her car. I was born and grew up in KY, moved to N. Cal for career in Electronics but decided to move back to KY after living 27 years in N. Cal. Came back in 1997 and live on a farm west of Elizabethtown KY. I like the area, major roads going in all directions, usually get left alone and most people are friendly and will help you.

You will find Meth labs everywhere, but I have not had any experiences here with those problems. I was a little concerned I might not be able to target shoot as much as I did on my very remote land in Cal. Well all I can say is I hope most of my neighbors do re-loading otherwise they are shooting a lot of money weekly.

I moved here in 1997 and utilities were much cheaper with electricity less than half what I paid in Cal. I do miss some of the Cal. weather and I had kind of forgotten about grass mowing but I do like the green all summer unlike the Cal brown and worrying about fires all summer in Cal.

I am also about 30 miles from the Knob Creek Machine Gun shoot twice a year, don't remember anything like that in Cal.

I'm curious. Why don't the good folks in Kentucky band together and approach these meth labs, and not-so-kindly tell them that this c**p isn't going to be tolerated in the state? I understand why poverty tends to lead people in this behavior, but I fail to understand why it is such a problem in a state that is so conservative, with so many churches, and such GREAT PEOPLE!

because you would most likely walk into a life altering situation, best thing to do "if" you know there is a meth lab is to report it, and let your tax dollars do the work. problem is most not all just don't want to get involved. sad but true
