WLZB2 - Acadia Park gun law changes

ACADIA NATIONAL PARK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A new law goes in to effect Monday that will change the firearms law at Acadia National Park. But the law isn't sitting well with some gun advocates.

The Maine Open Carry Association held an informational picnic in Acadia National Park Sunday. The group was marking the final hours before the state bans people from openly carrying firearms in the park. Earlier this year, a federal law went into effect, allowing guns in national parks and wildlife refuges. Under that law, states are permitted to override the federal statute and impose bans at national parks within their borders. Maine did that at Acadia. So, starting Monday, only those with concealed weapons permits, off-duty police, and retired law enforcement will be allowed to have guns in the park.

Shane Belanger of the Maine Open Carry Association said, "We are trying to raise awareness that open carry and concealed carry aren't different. We are just taking our coats off. If it's a nice warm day, open carry is a lot easier to do, and no one is going to get hurt here, and nothing bad is going to happen. "

I understand the weather was a little humid and reporter' left before any presentations while other reporters remained. As an NRA certified Instructor, Range Safety Officer and NRA Recruiter we spoke of the importance that every firearm owner should be properly trained by a qualified / certified instructor, understand the law and the parallels of open carry and concealed carry and the NRA ~ SAM influence on Acadia and future legislation with Maine State Parks... We also spoke of locations when and where you can carry and how important our representatives in Maine and Washington impact constitutional rights.

Our NRA certified Personal Protection of the Home course includes 3-hours of law delivered by respected Attorney John Chapman.

How can WLBZ2 report and not be present?

Most importantly the crowd in pouring rain cherished their freedom and liberty.
