An off-duty California Highway Patrol officer walking the Sacramento River Trail pulled a gun today on a transient who allegedly threatened him, police said.

Sgt. Brian Barner said the CHP officer, who was identified as Simon Hamann, was threatened around 2:25 p.m., by the transient, who "came at him."

Hamann, who pulled his gun and identified himself as a law enforcement officer, attempted to detain the transient at gunpoint near the trailhead parking lot off Court Street until police arrived.
The Sacramento River Trail is actually one of the top venues where I plan on carrying. While the trail system is a benefit to our community, it is not well patrolled and because of this, seems to attract both the homeless and the criminal element.
