When I was out and about hunting years ago I used to have DNR and police officers want to take a look at my revolver. They were always "shocked" that I was a successful handgun hunter, let alone a handgun hunter carrying a .357mag. They would then suggest that I go shooting with them sometime. A 357mag is really minimum-entry-level for handgun deer hunting but I can honestly say most times when I hit I am close enough that the deer doesn't run very far... shot placement and knowing you and your firearm's limits, though, is critical.
