Packing heat: The case for the open carrying of weapons
Page Last Updated: Monday July 26, 2010 6:33am PDT

Anita Roman reporting

According to the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution, each and every American citizen has the right to keep and bare arms.

And in Nevada, a person can carry a loaded or unloaded firearm without a permit as long as that weapon is fully exposed. This is referred to as “open carrying.”

Now, there’s a group gaining a lot of attention just by simply following the law.

You may not expect to see armed individuals make their way through the crowded Las Vegas Strip on a Saturday night.

Tim Farrell, however, is part of this group.

“Most people either don't notice or stare but, generally, 99 percent of the comments we receive are positive. A lot of people say thanks for carrying, thanks for standing up for my rights.”

Although the group doesn’t have a name or affiliation, Farrell explains that it does have a purpose.

“It's really for public awareness. Most everyone here open carries daily, everywhere they go. The grocery store, the mall, everywhere they go they are open carrying.”

. . .

For now, Farrell and his group will continue to meet and carry their weapons out in the open with the hope that more people will come to understand what they are doing and why.

Farrell says last June he had an encounter with police in which he filed a complaint. As a result, Metro Police was required to conduct a mandatory re-training session for their officers regarding Nevada’s open carry law.

Keep and BARE arms? Good grief. Doesn't anyone proofread? Ha.

Bob "Boob" Irwin, expert? I think not.

But Anita Roman did say "there is no law prohibiting open carry."

I did attend one open carry "meet, eat & greet" at Chili's in Vegas a couple of years ago. I wanna go again!

Bob Irwin is an expert? What qualifies him as an expert? His words clearly qualify him as a moron, as they conflict with reality. One cannot be an expert while also being in contrast with reality.

I thought that was funny too. In one scene, 20 OC'ers are walking around on the strip on a busy weekend night, no one bothering us or paying us any attention, even with the news camera recording our every move. 30 seconds later, the "expert" is heard saying that such activity would result in people running away scared, and police being called. What's your explanation, "Mr Expert Irwin"?

Mr. Irwin represents an interest group. His interest is the revenue that he can generate from customers taking CCW classes. If the cat were out of the bag that (GHASP) the world will not come to an end if you carry your firearm where everyone can see it, people my start to second guess paying him for his classroom instruction, range time and ammunition. So again his face is on TV trying to convince the public that panic will ensue at the sight of someone being so bold as to have their firearm on display for all to see, that a criminal will take your gun from you or the police will react with brutal and necessary force.

Bingo we have a winner. The Concealed Carry Instruction Industry (C2I2) protection society is alive and well in many parts of this country. These are the same people that try to garner special priveledges for those with a government permission slip. That is the perks for permittees program.

Remember that the C2I2 has some good apples that want to train citizens and they have some bad apples that just want to line their pockets. It appears that Mr. Irwin is one of the latter.

Bob Irwin's Opinion

When I took the CCW class from the Gun Store I was told never to open carry because I'd have my face rubbed into the asphalt by LVMPD. I was also told many falsehoods regarding Nevada laws. Mr. Irwin is full of opinions (and BS if you ask me).

Great video, I thought it was well done by the TV folks.

As far as the Bob Erwin thing goes, that's really just a sign of how unfamiliar folks are with firearms in general. Going to the gun store guy as an expert on guns is equivalent to going to the car salesman as an expert on cars. Most folks would know better than to do that because they are already familiar enough with cars to realize that a car salesman probably doesn't know any more than they do. It shows us that we have a lot of PR work to do in helping inform and educate the public about guns and the 2nd Amendment.

OC in Vegas

I appreciate the OC in Nevada, as much as I do here in AZ. Every time I to Nevada I have either my 9mm, or .45 and have walked through town in OC and nobody has ever said a word or "run off screaming". Not even in the Hotel/casinos.
