Just sent this to Herb Gillen:

Herb,
I am licensed to carry a concealed pistol in Michigan. I see on the website for the air show that "no weapons of any kind" are allowed. Can you please cite to the authority that allows this rule to be implemented? If you are not familiar with it, I should mention that Michigan has a firearm preemption law passed in 1990 that states:
"
A local unit of government shall not impose special taxation on,
enact or enforce any ordinance or regulation pertaining to, or regulate in any other manner the ownership, registration, purchase, sale, transfer, transportation, or
possession of pistols or other firearms, ammunition for pistols or other firearms, or components of pistols or other firearms,
except as otherwise provided by federal law or a law of this state."
I have bolded certain words for emphasis.
What this means is that if Willow Run Airport, which is "Managed by the Wayne County Airport Authority" (as quoted from
www.willowrunairport.com), is indeed an airport run by the county (a "local unit of government", therefore covered by preemption) the possession of firearms cannot be prohibited. This, of course, does not apply to the sterile areas of the airport, per the FAA.
My question remains; can you cite to the authority that allows the legal carry of a firearm to be prohibited in the non-sterile areas of the Willow Run Airport?
Regards,
