Craig Gilbert said:
...Johnson issued a statement Tuesday afternoon that began: "In my first days as a candidate, I used the wrong terms when discussing my strong support for gun rights and concealed carry here in Wisconsin. I'm a first-time candidate and I made a mistake. I used the term 'licensing' when I meant permits for the right to carry a concealed weapon. Wisconsin is one of only two states whose citizens do not have that basic constitutional right. I do not, nor will I ever, support licensing or registration of firearms."
Wants a do over. What's the difference between registering guns and registering gun carriers? Both are ineffective without legalizing the demand, "Ihre Papieren, bitte!" We enjoy only the rights that we defend.

While I don't agree with his before or after stand, it just goes to show he knows NOTHING about guns.

Before I got involved, I thought guns were registered. I guess it's from watching too much TV since all the 'police dramas' are usually based in NY or LA and NY does require registration.

aaah New Yory City, where to begin..First off, License are distributed in different categories in that Big Apple: Target Permits allow only use of a firearm at a licensed firing range; Preminses Permits allow weapons to be kept in a home or apartment; Now there's the Restricted Permits that allow the gunnower to carry their firearms concealed but only within the purview of their job, such as security, jewelers, armored car guards etc, etc, etc..

BUT!!! there is one more the UNRESTRICTED PERMIT. reserve for a certain New York State Senator, Mr. Schumer..
So to me it seems evident that Senator Schumer has two sets of rules-- One for Americans and one for himself !

Oh nuts, I almost forgot. Not only does Mr. Schumer carry a handgun, but the New York Police Department also provides armed escorts for the good senator. In fact, the Goverment Accounting office-- which is the investigative arm of the US Congress-- slammed Mr. Schumer's use of police resources for personal protection. Could it be Mr.Schumer believes he's special. Could it also be he wishes to ban private citizens ownship of firearms, while he enjoys layers of protection.

Totally off topic, and I apologize. Here is something I was told a while back, this comment jarred my memory. I was told that all firearms sales made at Wal-Mart (regardless of state) are filed with the state of New York, as a requirement of any business being operated within New York. Anyone know if this is true? What about ammunition?

This Johnson guy is completely IGNORANT, from what he has said he shows he knows absolutely nothing about our constitutional right to bear arms. If he keeps this crap up I don't know if I will even vote in this senate race.

Ron Johnson: “You know, like we license cars and stuff, I don’t have a real, I don’t have a real problem in a minimal licensing and stuff, I mean I don’t. Again, I’m, I’m not a gun owner, so it’s not a, it’s not a, it’s not something I’ve given a great deal of thought about. But I support the right.” [Rock River Patriots Meeting, 6.11.10]

The ad's narrator adds: "So let me get this straight, Ron Johnson believes our right to protect ourselves requires a license from the government? He supports licensing guns like cars? Well, Ron, that ain't freedom."

Feingold appears in the spot and says, "I approve this message because you shouldn't have to wait in line at the DMV to get a license for your constitutional rights and freedoms."

So let me get this straight... Russ Feingold is coming out as a proponent of non-permit right to carry??????

I find this hard to believe. I think its a trick to get gun owners to support Russ Feingold because Feingold KNOWS that carry-rights are by and large in-state issues and he'll NEVER have to vote on right to unlicensed carry in Washington.

I choose candidates based on their principles, not necessarily their knowledge. We can't all be experts at everything. In my view, the higher up in gov't a person is, the more important his/her principles, and less important their specific knowledge.

We beat each other up on this forum all the time over small wording mistakes. Official "duty" vs "capacity" and that sort of thing. But despite these mistakes we're all on the same team. I view Johnson the same way.

Johnson is a small gov't conservative. Feingold is the opposite. There is no perfect candidate. I'm getting behind Johnson and helping to dethrone Feingold.

You have the right to do whatever you want with your vote, however, not voting is voting for Russ Feingold. We, as Constitutional Carry 'evangelists' need to educate ourselves and the candidates. Once that is done, we need to support the candidate that moves the ball forward. I'd rather have a guy who knows NOTHING about guns and gun rights who is willing to listen than Feingold who knows our rights but doesn't give a crap.

So, I'd rather have a 100% pro Constitutional Carry candidate win but I will accept a 40% one over a 0% one any day of the week.

I will be voting Westlake in the primary and the be voting for the guy running against Feingold in November, be that Westlake or Johnson.

Nationally there are issues that in the next four years will have to be dealt with by the Senate and House.

Nationalized healthcare, massive debt increasing spending packages, massive entitlement programs. These are GUARANTEED to be voted on by our next senator.

Thats not to cut ANY candidate any slack on gun rights issues, anyone that says they are pro-freedom must support gun rights OR be willing to be educated in gun rights, but lets not kid ourselves. Right to carry legislation is a pressing state issue, not likely to be a national one.

Yeah I more than likely will end up voting in the race, however I find it somewhat symbolic Rohn Johnson's lack of knowledge on gun rights in relation to many other people in this state. There are so many people, hunters included that have serious misconseptions, or just plain ignorant beliefs when it comes to personal gun rights due to lack of knowledge. Just thought that was interesting to point out. Well election time is coming and I still have many emails and letters to write to my local and state reps.

Happy Friday!

Don't feel bad Paul. This kind of ignorance is pervasive. The DA that prosecuted my case thought that guns needed to be registered and wanted to know if I had obtained my guns "legally".

"Legally?" I said, the only possible illegality involved would be if I was a convicted felon, etc. trying to obtain guns.

Needless to say by the end of the trial the court and the DA were properly educated in the legalities of gun ownership. lol
