A local reserve officer who works in the local county jail was at a grocery store bottle return area with his two young kids. This is one of the only officers in the county who do not carry a gun. Legally he does need to get a CPL to carry the gun concealed but he did not see it necessary to carry a gun. While he was returning the cans a regular to the jail recognized the officer. The guy pulled out a knife and came at the officer saying things along the lines of "Who's in charge now? You not so tough outside of the jail are you?" The officer pleaded with the guy to not do anything. When the guy got to about 5-6 feet away he thankfully decided to stop and left.

My point to this story is if you are involved in law enforcement in anyway make sure to carry a gun on you. Hopefully you will never have to use it, but you never know when you are dealing with criminals. Thankfully for this officer, him and his children were not hurt, but it could have turned out much worse.

The man did not/would not see the necessity of an off duty firearm--even though in Detroit criminals would routinely execute those found to be cops during armed robberies. A few minutes later 'shots fired' at the bank--sure enough the bank was stuck up just after Evan left--the robbers found the cops ID in his wallet and executed him in front of his son. It is beyond me why all police are not armed at all times.

Yeah, I'm sorry I hate to say this but if you're a cop and you're not armed all the time you're an idiot. Federal court judges, in Michigan at least, can apply for a CPL and be able to carry the gun in "pistol free zones" incase they do encounter a criminal that may want to hurt them. That's why police need to carry at all times and in "pistol free zones" which they are exempt from.

First, I agree that a cop should carry at all times. Of course, I think everyone should carry at all times, subject only to his or her own discretion. It bothers me that judges are allowed to carry in PFZs, areas where Joe Citizen can't. If they can carry there, we should be able to as well.

at least in michigan,the average citizen with a cpl can open carry everywhere except courts federal buildings( including military Recruitment offices) and casino's


Thats a good thing for us at least,we just need more OC'ers in this state and work at making most of our pfz's go away for non-cpl and allow concealed carry where only open carry is allowed.

Not true...

LEOSA (the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act of 2004) makes it 100% legal for ALL sworn LEOs with the power of arrest, and who are qualified to carry on-duty, to carry concealed while off duty ANYWHERE in the country, without any permit. This Act essentially makes their LEO credentials their "CC Permit".

The one exception, due to a wording oversight in the act DOES NOT exempt LEOs CCing under LEOSA from the Federal Gun Free School Zone Act of 1995, so technically, if an LEO is off-duty, it is not legal for them to carry on the property of any K-12 school, just like citizens...

While my heart felt condolences go out to that officer's family and more especially to his son, the following has to be said.

He died of bad luck combined with terminal stupidity. He had available the means to protect himself and others and did not avail himself of those means even after having his shortcomings illuminated for him.

I too would like to see the citation on this one. If he was working the jail it's possible that he didnt have arrest powers and/or was not sworn. Many juridictions do this. Unfortunatly they do wear uniforms to and from work so I recommend not stopping anywhere. Not to mention that working the jail, uou do tend to see and interact with crooks!
