I tried to search this among the forums but didn't get anywhere. I have an older browser and that may have something to do with it. I watched this YouTube video over the weekend. This should be required reading for everyone who will consider carrying a weapon for the purpose of self defense.

I do not and will not engage in police bashing like some do here in these forums. If it weren't for the police I couldn't do my job everyday. I have always believed that if you obey the law you have nothing to fear when talking to the police. I was wrong. Very wrong.

There are a number of videos out there like this. I am not sure that the videos are part of the Wash-Rinse-Repeat Sticky, but probably should be.

It was an eye-opener for me as well.

I saw this one about a year ago. Be sure to watch the second clip....Don't talk to the cops part 2. The link is on the right when you watch the first one. These videos sure are an eye opener.

By all means, if you are accused of a serious offense, lawyer up. Loose lips will probably sink your ship.

But stone walling law enforcement is NOT ALWAYS in your best interests.

Do you think that people frequently get off for traffic violations because they are friendly, respectful and honest? Yes they do. Do people get tickets for the same violations because they are asses and give the police a hard time? YES.

If you are in violation of something minor like fishing without a license, dog not on a leash, no current proof of insurance etc....refusing to answer any questions will almost always work against you. Beleive it or not, police do not always throw the book at people. It is very common for people to talk themselves out of arrests or citations.

It's been awhile since I read the W-R-R Sticky so I can't say if this video is in it or not. I agree that it should be there though.

Putting on my flame suit, but I enjoy talking to the police. They are almost always pretty cool people once you get passed their shell of understandable suspicion. Obviously it's different when I am the subject of a stop, but even then being relaxed and chill (obviously not letting them infringe on your rights) can get you a long way. The more we can display the pro-LEO sentiment that *most* of us have, the more pleasant ALL interactions with police will be. How much easier would a MWAG call be if you, two week earlier, had stopped and talked to an officer who had been directing traffic all day just to break up his monotony? Or even better, how much easier would be if two weeks earlier you witnessed an accident, stopped, and told the LEO that took the report that you would be more than happy to be a witness should the need arise? Or if two weeks earlier you have reported a crime you witnessed?

I find no reason to completely avoid the police, or the undertoe of anti-LEO sentiment that I see sometimes from some members. We are on the same team as the police. But that all being said, know your rights, because just like any other occupation you may encounter anywhere else, some of them are indeed just looking for a reason.

An opinion...

There is a difference between bowing down and offering respect.

There is a difference between treating people with respect and standing on authority.

But the one thing that remains the same for both is:

Respect must be earned... and respect is a two way street.

I personally endeavor to treat all persons regardless of their position, or lot, in life with respect............ right up to the point where they treat me with disrespect.

Two way street.

Oh man I agree 100%:exclaim:

Here is how I see it, give respect up until you get dis-respect! Most people when they have a "bad" experience with a police officer it is because they were a butt-head from the start. Remember, they may have the same theory, of give respect until I don't get it, so if you start off bad then so will they. This being said their are butt-head cops, I've met them, but trust me, their are more good cops than bad. Really their are!!!

Now the main thing with police, (even with the good ones) is learn to recognize what fishing is, and when they are doing it. Stay respectful (unless they are being disrespectful [you can fish and not be a total tool]), call them out on it make a joke of it. Say something like, "excuse me sir, are you fishing"? But laugh and smile while you do it, and stay respectful, they will most likely back off, keep them on the topic at hand, if you called them for something redirect the conversation to the reason they are their.

Cops are just people, if you really wanna be able to make sure they don't snake you learn to know when to STFU when necessary, and take a sociology class.
