GRNC Alert 08-27-10:
EPA Considering Lead Ammo Ban - Act Now

ALSO IN THIS ALERT (See bottom after EPA Actions):
- Closing of Flintlock Valley Shooting Range in the Uwharrie National Forest

Giving in to pressure from a famously anti-hunting group -- the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) -- hiding behind the ruse of environmental protection, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson is considering placing a ban on lead ammunition. Further tipping its hand, the CBD also wants lead sinkers used in fishing to be included as well.

Jackson, who is responsible for banning bear hunting in New Jersey, seeks to do this under the Toxic Substance Control Act of 1976 despite the fact that Congress expressly exempted ammunition from this legislation. The net result if this goes through will be the steep increase in the price of ammunition... in fact it will nearly double the cost to the average hunter and target shooter.

PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD

Are you going to allow this? You the public will have a chance to chime in to the EPA from now to Oct. 31, but will you stop there, with a simple little "I'm against it!" message to a pack of bureaucrats who may not listen? We didn't think so. That is why we are including the contact information for both of our US Senators and all US Congressional representatives from North Carolina.

IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED

* Go to the EPA's website and leave your comment: http://www.regulations.gov/search/Regs/home.html#submitComment?R=0900006480b3974b
* Contact Sen. Richard Burr: Phone: 202 224-3154; Fax: 202 228-2981; http://burr.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=Contact.ContactForm
* Contact Sen. Kay Hagan: Phone -- (202) 224-6342; Webform -- http://hagan.senate.gov/?p=contact

Message to deliver:

Dear:

Lisa Jackson at the Environmental Protection Agency is overstepping her authority by attempting to ban lead ammunition. She mocks the mandate of Congress exempting ammunition from the Toxic Substance Control Act of 1976 by attempting this.

I urge you to show the leadership that accompanies your position by informing her that she is in violation of the law by trying this backdoor attempt at banning ammunition by making it unaffordable.
Sincerely,

A North Carolina Voter

Closing of Flintlock Valley Shooting Range in the Uwharrie National Forest

Flintlock Valley Shooting Range is the only public range in Central North Carolina and serviced 1,000 people per month. The forest ranger closed the range in May after an apparent accident in April 2010.

At US Forest Service request, the NRA inspected the range in May 2010 and asked to review the incident reports, which required a FOIA request. To date, the NRA has yet to receive the requested reports and is therefore unable to complete a thorough, credible review of the range layout.

Repeated attempts to contact the Uwharrie Forest Ranger, Ms. Deborah Walker, have failed. All other employees contacted refuse to comment on the range and refer queries to the Forest Ranger.

The USFS began a routine, 15-year land and resource management plan review in March 2010. The public comment period ended on 7 May 2010, and there were no comments made for or against the range. The range was closed on 18 May 2010.

IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED

Deliver this message:

Dear MS. Walker,

I am deeply concerned over the temporary emergency closure of Flintlock Valley Shooting Range. I request that you do everything possible to keep this range open for the shooting public. It is the only public range available in Central North Carolina, and it is imperative we keep this range available for the more than 1,000 people per month who were using it. The Uwharrie Forest accommodates many varied recreational activities including hunting, fishing, hiking, and horseback riding. I believe there is ample room in the Uwharrie Forest to accommodate the recreational shooting sports as well.

Sincerely,

A Concerned North Carolina Citizen

GRNC is a little late to the lead ban dance don't you think? EPA already realized they lack jurisdiction over ammunition and dropped that portion of the proposed ban. It's now just about fishing sinkers.
