My first open carry (Moscow)

I finally worked up the courage of open carrying with my new pistol after talking to the sheriff be certain that I wouldn't go to jail hahah. I went in to Winco and a few of the male staff noticed that I had a pistol on my hip, the asked "are you with an agency?" I said no LOL I'm 18 so thats kind of funny to me. The first female to see that I had a pistol in plain sight screamed "GUN!!!" but before I could turn around to say anything a few of her co-workers were already saying that as long as they could see it in plain sight then it is legal.

Has anyone else had the woman screaming problem?

Yes I had 3 ladies at Winco here in Boise, but I been OC for 1 year now, no problems, I go any were, I carry a 44 magnum and men asked the caliber and model , I tell them about O.C. in Idaho, a lot of people still can not believe it yet, lots of work for us to educate them.

Why waste your time going to ask the Sheriff? Its legal, do it. It has been legal for over a century.

Congrats on the first OC, make sure you study and know the Idaho laws for use of force. I hope you're doing it for the right reasons and not to show off.

I've never had the person, female or not, screaming. In Moscow your biggest challenge will be the know-it-all college kids that will stare, make snide comments and eventually call the cops. MPD and LCSO is well educated on OC and you shouldn't have any issues. I did get escorted out of Safeway on the East Side once by MPD because some employee called MPD on me. I'll dig up the thread and post it here. I talked to David Duke about his cops being used as private security and they "should" know better now. I also later learned that there is a case law that makes it illegal for LEO to be used by a private business that is open to the public as security to escort a person off the property. Just wish I could remember what it is.... I also learned since that even that I don't have to present ID or my CPL when confronted like that and to first ask "Am I being detained or am I free to go?" at the beginning of every LEO encounter.

I moved up here recently so I just had to be absolutely certain I wouldn't get in to trouble. I'm joining the Marine Corps so if I get any law infractions I get an ear full from 6 different people.

Don't worry I'm doing it for the right reasons. I work at 2 places that handle lots of cash.

I'm on the hunt for use of deadly force laws now. Any more info would be amazing. Is open carry legal on the University of Idaho campus? Someone told me they recently changed the laws but I can't get a straight story.

Grats on your first carry. It will get easier as you get less self-conscious about it.

Always good to have an idea on what can happen and how to respond to the various possibilities. Sounds like the Winco staff has had this happen enough times that they can deal with it effectively.

Some people will be curious, some belligerent and confrontative so take your own pace and concentrate on staying comfortable.

Campus is a mixed bag. According to school rules students and staff cannot have firearms on campus property. It doesn't really say anything about Alumni and everyone else. State preemption defers to the University to set their own rules and really the most they can do is have you trespassed. If you do carry on campus, expect the cops and the school's new rent-a-cops to have a hissy fit. I chose to conceal when I was on campus as a student and still do when I come visit.

Basically they can regulate firearms possession but there is nothing to back them up. It is a school rule, not an enforceable law with any kind of punishment.

Well, staff would probably be subject to discharge and it wouldn't surprise me if the student was able to be expelled for violating school rules. There are a couple of guys down south who have carried on the sidewalks at BSU without issue but I don't believe anyone has actually walked into a building while OC'ing or been outed while CC'ing on campus.

Sorry to hear about the random misinformed girl. I have been OC'ing in Moscow for 3 years or so and never had that response Winco by far is the most understanding store in the area when it comes to OC. Let me know if you want to get together for an OC lunch or coffee or something if you don't want to OC by yourself. I am open on the weekends.
