hello all I just moved here from California. I am very interested in OCing, until I get my CCW in November I signed up at The Gun Store for their free course, but I wont get in until november. So I am very nervous about carrying my firearm (coming from California) Do I have to Register it, Can I carry it loaded, Do I have to load it with hollow points? I know I have more questions but cant think of any more right now. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A couple quick answers: If you reside in Clark County for more than 60 Days you must register all handguns.
Loaded is fine. Load it with whatever you want.

Don't carry it in the obvious places that come to mind, schools, courtrooms etc.

Don't be nervous, you're in a free state now.

Ok will get gun registered tomorrow. So is there a law that says I cant be within 1,000 feet of a school or anything? I know its a free state now but its a real culture shock just knowing that I can now do what I wasn't allowed to do, just doesn't feel right and to be quite honest I am very nervous, hopefully I can overcome this feeling soon. Is there going to be an OC event anytime soon? Perhaps in a group setting I can see what its like and be comfortable with it.

Welcome fellow escapee!

Here is a link to the Nevada law re weapons and concealed carry. http://www.leg.state.nv.us/NRS/NRS-202.html

Short version is you can't carry your weapon open or concealed:
1. On school or child care property
2. In posted public (government) buildings
3. Airport, postoffice, VA, and probably other federal agency buildings

You are legal to carry open or concealed with a permit everywhere else. Private property owners can post their property "no guns allowed," but it isn't a crime to ignore the signs. You do have to leave the property if requested to do so or else face criminal trespass charges.

Open carriers generally obey the private property signs. I know lots of concealed carriers don't pay any attention to them.

Suggestion, since you mentioned a couple of times that you are nervous, I say take a little time, and build your confidence and skills. Give us the part of town you live in, chances are we willo know of a place or two that we can pretty much garuntee no problems. also if we know where you are generaly located we can see about hanging out and introduce you to Nevada style, I say, do not go all in all at once get a good retention holster and go out of your comfort zone a little at a time. I am in the Northwest if you PM me, I can try to meet and we could go get a coffee or something,

Welcome to the forum and welcome to Nevada, your first task is to deprogram your brain from all of the CA bullcrap.

For starters take a gander at http://forum.opencarry.org/forums/showthread.php?79157-Open-Carry-Tri-Fold-Pamplet-with-Logo

this has all of the respective laws created by a few of the members here. I would suggest what others above have had to say, baby steps is where its at. At first you will feel like everyone is watching you and you will be nervous and the blood will be pumping. Rest assure this will go away the more you OC.

spend time here reading through the topics and read through the NRS section posted above. currently there isnt a meet on the books as of yet but that can change and should change shortly. Like others have suggested if you want to post up where you are located (assuming your in the vegas valley)

also check here often and feel free to post any comments or concerns or questions a bunch of great guys/gals here with tons of knowledge and information for you. I would also suggest getting a voice recorder and keeping that handy.

registration is free and any police sub station can handle it for you and get your very own blue card. Please also note they will most likely try and tell you to carry it on you, this is not a requirement as there is no law that states you MUST have your blue card on you at all times. What most do is put it in their safe or with the case of the weapon as this is the only copy you have to prove you have registered your weapon.

Also, when you take your CCW at the Gun Store you will be told several outlandish lies about OC and handgun law in general, take it with a grain of salt. This store is notorious for spreading lies and rumors about laws they know nothing about. CCWs are handy for when your in a pinch and need to conceal. Whether or not its "Tactically Superior" is well.....a matter of opinion and like a$$holes everyone has one.

I would venture to your local gas station for starting your OC adventures as well as Walmart, BassPro, Starbucks, all of these stores are OC friendly and you should not have a single problem.

also note

Nevada law only prohibits concealed carry on your person if you do not have a CCW. Have no fear when you drive your car so long as it's not concealed on your person you are fine. I should also note that things like seat belts and arm rests are considered obstructions and do not effectively conceal your firearm the way a shirt or jacket does in the eyes of the law. You can legally drive your car with your firearm loaded and a round in the chamber (bar long guns). It can be in your glove box, inside your center console or under the seat and not be considered a concealed firearm. if it's tucked under your shirt then it is concealed and you must have a CCW.

One thing that will help ease your nervousness is knowledge. You need to know what to say if and when you are confronted. You need to know what bounds the police must stay within and what your rights are.

For instance consider the following retorts

Merchant: Is that a gun?
You: No, it's a firearm. Criminals carry guns.

Concerned uneducated citizen asks you: Are you a cop?
You: No, do you need one? I'll call them for you.

Police officer asks you: Why are you carrying a firearm?
You: (Say nothing)

Police officer asks you: Where are you going / where are you coming from?
You: (Say nothing)

Police officer asks to see your ID:
You (if driving): Must show ID
You (if not driving): Are required only to give your name (spelling, DOB, SSN, Address not required).

North Las Vegas Police officer tells you that firearms in a car are prohibited by local ordinance:
You: Respectfully tell them that State law preempts all local ordinances regarding firearms with the exception of registration.

These are only a few example situations you should be particularly aware of. Other commonly asked things are, "What kind of permit do you have to have to carry a firearm?" I simply tell them that in Nevada as long as you can legally own the firearm you can carry it in plain sight. It is also not illegal to carry into banks, casinos, bars or restaurants, though private property means they reserve the right to refuse service and demand that you leave. You can consume and even be under the influence of alcohol while armed, keep in mind that you may nor legally carry a firearm with a BAC > .10. Around the house, you can conceal on your person without the need for a CCW, but the law is somewhat unclear about areas of your property that allow unrestricted access to members of the public, like your front yard or porch, be careful.

There is a federal law that says that you may not posses a firearm within 1000 feet of a school (constitutionally questionable), but there is no state law other than prohibiting being on school grounds with a firearm. Technically the feds or even metro could charge you, but this is practically a non issue in Nevada. Metro doesn't really want to have to make a federal arrest because they would have to charge you in federal court and federal court that is a whole other ball game in the world of law enforcement. And lets face it, How often do you run into federal law enforcement? Dont worry about the federal 1000 foot rule.

Dont worry about the federal 1000 foot rule.

EXCEPT if you are committing some other offense, including loitering, which will get the cops called on you. If you are hanging around the school acting suspiciously, being armed will probably turn a field interview into an arrest.

If you are just passing through the area, or if you live or work within that 1000 feet, don't worry about it.

Thanks for all the answers and support. this is a great forum, I just got back from registering my firearm. It was weird walking into a police station with my gun in hand I was just waiting to get shot, but it was quick and painless. Now for the open carry, I'm currently trying to get the courage to do it, God I feel like such a chicken sh*t! I bought a nice retention holster when I visited my mom in Colorado last Christmas, so I'm good there. Now I just need to get up the balls to do it. Oh I live like a mile away from the South Point down Silverado Ranch rd. & Bermuda rd.

Dont Worry about the LEO's!!!!! Just be friendly

I would say thats would be best...DONT REMAIN SILENT!!!!!... you have nothing to hide and you are not braking the law... the fifth amendment is there to protect you from incriminating yourself ... thats kinda hard to do if your not commiting a crime!!!!!
i have had no trouble with metro... i have seen metro around town at least three times in the last three months, and all of them noticed My Glock 23 on my right hip... not one even came up to me to talk or ask questions and i was less than 15 feet away in all cases... the cops that i have met are pretty cool guys... and it seems that they are well informed of our rights. but if i did meet a misinformed LEO... i would try to talk to him or her and if i felt that my rights were being infringed i would calmly ask for a supervisor be present. I would try not to piss off any LEO... because i dont want problems and i am well within my rights and the law.
BTW I am a 20 year old male and one would expect that i would resent any LEO, but i have found that when you are within the law, the cops do what they can to help you out.

AND don't be nervous... most people don't even notice... and if they do ... the only questions i have been asked is " are you an LEO" and i reply with no and i explain the laws in the state and they have all been nice... i think most people just think that your a LEO and they just mind their own business... good luck ...

what side of town do you live in?

Yes remain silent. You have no reason to speak to the police. Anything you say can and will be used against you. The police in this town are no ones friend. They can think whatever they wish if you did nothing wrong you have ZERO reason to speak to them. Your mouth will only help them find something to charge you with.

Exactly. The police can misrepresent your statements the same way the media can. You may think what you are saying is innocuous, if taken out of context can sound completely different and even incriminating. There are ways to exercise your fifth amendment rights without sounding as if you have something to hide.

For instance, you could say "with all due respect officer, but I do not wish to engage in conversation or answer questions. Am I now free to go?" This puts them in a situation where no grey area exists. Either they have evidence against you that would warrant further detention or they do not. Now they can not testify in court that they never kept you against your will. They must explain why you were not free to leave which begs the question, what was there reasonable articulable suspicion?

Mouth shut = safe 100% of the time. Mouth open = rolling the dice with your liberty.

This doesn't mean you can not answer when a polite encounter with a police officer results in a friendly greeting such as "hello, how are you today," or "What do you think of Kimber 1911's?" Remember Police officers are citizens just like you are. You can be friendly and courteous with each other, just know the difference between investigation and friendly conversation. Just know that when the police are involved a friendly conversation can turn into an investigation if you don't watch what you say.

You live fairly close to myself, I live in southern Highlands across the freeway just south from the south point if you ever wanted to go grab a bite to eat or a coffee I'm off of work Fridays and Saturdays just send me a PM and ill walk with you OC. I'm sure we will have another meet soon as well and thats a great way to build confidence up.

I would suggest OC while your at your house to get comfortable with having your tool on your side. Then venture to local stores you will visit frequently.

Open carry away. You said you are interested in open carrying until you get your CCW. I have had a CCW for over 15 years and almost never carry it concealed in Las Vegas. I personal will talk to any LEO if near them. Never about the firearm. I greet them with how are you doing today with a smile and they open up. I open with almost any generic conversation, busy day, weather, traffic and they appear to be glad to have a positive chat with an open carry person. Check out the first blog meeting at Freemont experience the last few pages.

Well I finally open carried today! I was going with my family to the Clark county shooting range and had to get some bullets and thought this would be a great trial run. So I strapped on my gun and got in the car and drove to my local walmart and sat in the parking lot for a couple of minutes then I went on my way, well Remmy you were right my blood was pumping and I thought I was going to have a heart attack by the time I got to the greeter at the door. Well she saw my firearm and didn't say anything I just said hello and walked to the ammunition section got what I needed had a little conversation with the employee there and walked out wow what a rush!!!! Then I felt a lot more confident and went to 7-11, got a couple looks here and there but no biggie. Then went home picked up the family drove to the range and had a good time that place is awesome. I really look forward to going again.

Crazy scary isn't it? It's a worlds of difference from CA. All the false expectations that have been told to us (e.g. it's going to be a blood bath, people will run screaming, the cops will be called, you will be talked to and asked to leave) basically don't come to fruitation here in NV.

The first time - the best time. After that you just make sure you don't carry into a Post Office and watch your back (keep you situational awareness/IFF going) and you'll be fine.

At some point, you feel naked w/o your sidearm.

Great to hear you finally were able to do it and yes it is a rush the first time and very glad all went well. Trust me when i say this it will get easier and soon you'll not give it a second thought. Walk with confidence that you are prepared to defend your life and that you are very much within your rights and completely legal!
