Two sides of youth violence; hot air and a sensible solution

"The Children’s Defense Fund argues that we should “Protect Children, Not Guns” on its website. It offers several would-be “solutions” to juvenile gun deaths, but they read like a wish list of gun prohibition. They want to close the so-called “gun show loophole.” They want to renew the ban on so-called “assault weapons.” They recommend removing firearms from the home. They presume such steps will stop teens from murdering one another over real or imagined insults or other problems.

"This column believes firearms safety education in the schools could at least help reduce accidental shootings, though it would be nonsense to claim that any program is going to prevent a deliberate slaying..."

Given motivation and time....

Man will find a way...

Look at the innovative "tools" found in jails. Also look at England and other parts of the "Civilized World" where firearms are banned.

I believe England was looking at banning all 12 inch + chef knives since it could be used as a weapon to kill.

Lower minimum wage, so businesses can can hire every youth who wants a job. Eliminate laws that make hiring employees a burden on a business (or at least minimize them).

Create vocational schools for kids that obviously have no scholastic future (starting at around 9th or 10th grade).

Throw out the current public education system and start over. Make teaching a performance based merit position, privatize wherever possible, reduce administration positions, make parents pay for the entire expense of their childs education (which should make them take a more active roll, because people seldom care about what they don't have to pay for).

End all welfare to able bodied parents (single parents and couples) based on having multiple kids. If you're dumb enough to have 8 kids you can't afford, that's your fault. Yes it will be tough at the start, and will tax non-profits and churches to fill the need, but over time it stops rewarding bad bahavior, and will lead to fewer 'unwanted' babies (paycheck babies) who in turn grow up to be unwanted (and violent) teenagers.

Never trust the current public education system to teach gun safety. They can't teach things like math and english (which is arguably their most important task), so to think they could teach anything else is a lesson in useless optimism.

Focus on catching violent kids at younger ages and (here's a shocking idea) intercede in the course of their future. That means some kids will get locked up for a LOOOOONG time (like the killers of Tuba Man should have been, after they killed a guy... instead of getting off with a slap on the wrist and let out to do more crimes). It could also mean some kids get into counseling, or placed in a mentorship program, or manual labor work group, etc.

Society, and government, screws up and creates the problem... and then tries ways to fix it that makes the problem worse (or creates other problems). Yes, the Ship of State is in fine hands, as it heads toward the rocks.

Trying to lower the minimum wage is like trying to get blood from a turnip. Besides whats the guarantee that the business would hire more youths? And how much would you have to lower it by?

Thats what they do in Germany. At least when I lived there in the 80s. The problem here is you will hear cries of racism once group X moves more to the vocational side than the scholastic. Not that there is anything wrong with the vocational side. There are good paying jobs to be had, but with certain poverty pimps perception is everything and they thrive on it.

Agreed. The problem: teachers union. But what exactly does "take a more active roll" mean specifically? Join the PTA? Volunteer as a football coach?

In addition, if you are recieving welfare then perhaps you should be picking up garbage on the side of the road or removing graffitti from public buildings.
