That's impossible. They made it illegal to carry a loaded weapon (12031) in a school zone (626.9)... I guess that since he was trying to murder people at the same time that was even more "illegaller".

Of course I have to add that under these circumstances the law makes the likelihood of an armed citzen responding to the threat extremely remote.

Another statutory failure.

Separately, notice the nice little report that the suspect is "not cooperating" with the investigation. Can't come out and say, "entirely legitimately exercising his right to remain silent."

Also notice the little innuendo about mental health problems. The idea being to connect non-cooperation and mental problems. That's just sick.

"He is possibly a transient who lives in the area," said Carlsbad Police Lt. Kelly Cain said. "He is not cooperating with the investigation. He probably has some mental health issues."

Lunatic. Hope the kids are OK. So much for gun free school zones.

In this incident, like all the other similar incidents, only the innocent were unarmed and unable to defend themselves, while those seeking to cause mayhem were able to do so unimpeded. Will the sheeple ever wake up?

News title should read "Gunman prevails in injuring two kids thanks to backing from the Brady Campaign."

Way to go anti-gun groups! Really teaching us a lesson on how to keep criminals from attacking innocent people.

Don't expect any charges for either 12031 or 626.9 in this case. They'll charge him with attempted murder (a real crime) and assault with a deadly weapon (also a real crime), as they should, but those "other" (read: victimless) charges will be conveniently left out. They're not meant for the "real" criminals, you see. Malum prohibitum crimes are designed to make criminals out of people who don't actually harm others, which is why real criminals like this piece of work won't see those charges. The prosecutor will be content with the standard slate and the 10-year gun crime enhancement.

Speaking of the coverage of this story, in an AP account and a few others, a (male) witness identified as "Terry Lynn" claims the shooter was rambling and "saying something about the president" or words to that effect. I don't see the relevance other than the media trying to use the actions of this obviously disturbed individual to make a link-- however tenuous-- to political conservatives. :(

Will be interesting to see what sort of demonization of guns and gun owners results. And as pointed out, none of we LACs could have been within 1000 feet in order to help. I explained to a friend the term "Victim Disarmament Zone" (which I learned here) when talking about this incident because it's a perfect example. It also proves what we all understand. No law PREVENTS a crime when a BG is intent on committing one. It may provide justification for punishment after the fact, however that does little for the victims-- in this case, innocent children who thankfully were not killed, but nonetheless, severely traumatized.

Again, the 626 statute proved useless. What NEEDS to be done is capital punishment for this sort of thing. And those who say that capital punishment isn't a deterrent-- well of course not! That's because how it works now, with endless appeals, the criminal is more likely to die of old age than be executed. If this guy was hanging from a rope by next Saturday, THAT would be a deterrent.

+1

I like this idea. Title every story about a robbery or shooting in a victim disarmament zone.

Just be a little careful not to reach too far on the conclusion.

Once we all have our CCWs issued by Sheriff Gore in San Diego county .....

The gun owning CCW licensed gun owners would be able to respond to the threats way in advance of any PD ....standby Sheriff Gore you are about to be forced into issuing CCW's to all San Diego gun owners by request or face fines totalling $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$s for not being in compliance with a Court order ......

People of good moral character should be able to intervene and resolve a threat without a golden permission slip.

We need to rally and use this to press the issue on GFSZ and how ineffective this law is. Otherwise the media and the Brady Bunch would spin this against 2A rights.

Anybody know anyone from the media to cover this with ouor perspective in view?

Can bigtoe use this as an example, though?

Write a press release then you can submit it to all the news agencies in their "report news" forms on their websites.

I e-mailed the local ABC affiliate about Sam's award from the SD County Sheriff. Gave links to the docs.
I didn't see a word about it on the news.

Editors with big black pen would simply cross it out before it reaches the press. Know anybody who can nudge the editors a bit?

Unfortunately they are not going to pick it up unless they have someone who believes in the cause, which they probably don't.

Best way to get news coverage is controversy unfortunately.

One way might be to stage a rally against the gun free school zones. Of course doing that tactfully and effectively would be very difficult and time consuming.

Probably the best option we have is to just talk to our friends and family about it and hope it spreads through grass-roots efforts.
